After receiving her Zumba certification in 2006 and inspiring her mother to board the fitness-dancing bandwagon, Jennifer Diaz and her mother, Esmie Megee, founded ZuMama Fitness in 2009 to help motivate people on their health and weight-loss journeys. Today, a staff of 18 certified instructors helps manage the robust schedule of classes that cater to all ages and ability levels. In the citrus-hued studio, students mimic teachers through easy-to-follow steps set to upbeat Latin tunes, sometimes under the twinkling lights of a disco ball that enhance the party-like atmosphere and contain outbreaks of Saturday night fever.
Atop the glossy wood floors with their reflections winking back at them from the wall-to-wall mirrors, Mary Lee & Dance Suave’s instructors lead small groups through a variety of dance styles. They teach classic ballroom dancing, such as waltz, swing, and rumba to individuals and couples, and invite them for dancing parties where guests can practice their moves. The instructors also lead dance-fitness Zumba classes.
The power or a boxer; the poise of a dancer; the focus of a Pilates practitioner. Piloxing delivers all of these traits with a single workout that combines Pilates, boxing, and dance. Piloxing offers an alternative to the Zumba classes that fill most of Z Live Studio's group exercise schedule. Intense Insanity workouts and dance-based Bokwa also promise upbeat sessions of calorie-burning.
Bailamos Dance Fitness fuses fun and fitness with a wealth of high-energy cardio classes that motivate students to tone their bodies and burn fat with dance and full-body movement. Patrons groove to Latin music in Zumba classes, and punch and kick their way to good health during cardio kickboxing.
At Alpha Fit, functional movements are at the core of each workout. With special attention to safe techniques, the focus on functional movements not only whips bodies into shape, but also makes everyday movements easier. CrossFit, high-intensity interval training, and boot-camp classes each promise different, fast-paced exercises that quickly sculpt muscles and burn calories.
To Dan Kim, a red mango is something truly special. The fruit only becomes that color for a very brief time, when it's most ripe, most delicious, and most nutritious. This became an allegory for Dan, a frozen yogurt enthusiast, who was conceptualizing his first yogurt shop. He opened the first location in 2007, vowing to use all-natural ingredients that, like the red mango, are both tasty and healthy. His commitment to conscientious snacking certainly caught on, as the brand has since expanded to more than 200 locations throughout North and South America. In 2011, Red Mango took top honors for frozen yogurt shops and for healthy options in a Zagat poll.
In addition to being all-natural, Red Mango's award-winning yogurt satisfies a range of diets by being gluten-free, kosher, and low-fat or non-fat. Each of the nearly 50 flavors, which range from green tea to dulce de leche, contains calcium, protein, and immune-boosting probiotics. Depending on the location, people can serve themselves or order from the full-service counter as they concoct sundaes crowned with anything from fresh fruit to peanut butter cups. The menu includes more than just fro-yo sundaes, however—it also features yogurt parfaits, Skinny Sorbettos, and fruit or boba smoothies. In addition to developing secret handshakes with their favorite yogurt taps, regular visitors can sign up for the Club Mango rewards program to receive special offers and discounts.
