The Outdoor Adventure Center's wildly experienced guides have led groups off the grid for more than a quarter century, pursuing rugged fun in the scenery and fresh air of mountains, rivers, and coastlines. Explorers at heart, the staff boldly launch kayaks into the ocean around the San Juan Islands and conquer the frothy waters of the scenic Skykomish River, known for its beginner-friendly rapids, migrations of spawning merpeople, pool and drop areas, and breathtaking views of 5,000-foot mountain peaks. Horseback and hiking trips delve into the lush woods, and nature photography excursions pause to celebrate the beauty of the wilderness near Index. The core team of 14 guides takes safety seriously, most with certifications from the American Canoe Association, training in wilderness first aid, CPR, and swiftwater rescue, and life vests tattooed over their chests.

The ability to swim allowed humanity to explore the seas, discover pearls inside oysters, and evolve arms devoid of inflatable muscles. Wave Aquatics Centers’ instructors understand the importance of such a skill, aiming to impart it within children and adults alike across the community. Working as a nonprofit organization fueled by the common purpose of providing students of all ages with a slew of programs and lessons, the staffers share their wisdom in Juanita and Redmond High School pools. They train their charges in competitive swimming, maintaining three teams, including a year-round Masters-level team taught by professional coaches and reformed mermaids.

The viewers of Evening Magazine had 131 choices for Western Washington’s best fitness instructor of 2012, but Sheree James and her team at Shake It Off Dance Fitness came out on top. It’s no surprise, considering the staff turns dance fitness into full-on festivals of fitness, spurring on rooms full of exercisers through Latin-inspired Zumba dance classes, as well as hip-hop and urban striptease aerobics. It’s not all about cardio at Shake It Off, though; instructors also lead Zumba toning, during which students shimmy and shake while holding a weighted bar or a maraca made of cement so that they simultaneously forge muscles.

Q&A with Tamara Menteer Gonzalez, Owner And Lead Island Fun-time Hostess.

What is Challenge Island?

Challenge Island is based off the TV show, Survivor?but the good news is, nobody gets kicked off the island. Every island has a different set of challenges. We use recycled and green materials that can be found in most home pantries, so children can challenge themselves (and others) again. The program is designed to introduce intellectual challenges and encourage children to interact with others, rather than taking on each challenge alone. Children start by thinking through the experiment and drawing out plans by brainstorming with their tribes. Then they tackle the challenge once and determine if anything needs to be fixed before trying it again. Sometimes challenges have up to three opportunities for improvement.

This is scientific methodology at its best. The entire program is structured in a manner to address the child's thinking powers and improve social skills, team spirit, and public speaking skills. Many intellectually smart children have unique differences in the social spheres due to how their minds work. Our camp focuses on the child in a holistic fashion. Our teachers also undergo background checks, and campers may request to be placed in the same tribe as their friends.

I'm a first-timer. How do you get me ready for the experience?

Children should dress comfortably. Snacks should be sent along for our four-hour camps; otherwise, we will offer popcorn and some vegetables and fruit. Children will be asked to be good team players and social skills are part of the regular curriculum. Just make sure your child is rested, well fed, and does not have a tummy full of sugar, and things will likely go perfectly. However, if a child becomes unruly, parents will be called in to participate with their child until the improper behavior stops.

Have you ever been a patron of your own business? If so, what was the most enjoyable part?

I did get training by being a "student" in both Las Vegas and Atlanta. The best parts of the experience were gaining a sense of belonging to a team, thinking confidently about engineering concepts, and having a ton of fun. I laughed and used my brain a lot. Who knew building towers from paper and tape would be so challenging? And studies show that laughter improves learning.

The team of spa and medical professionals at Aura Laser Skin Care dispenses FDA-approved treatments whenever possible. When fine-tuning the appearance of men and women through laser hair removal, SmartLipo, laser skin resurfacing, or chemical peels, only treatments given the official thumbs-up are used on clients. For newer procedures, the staff relies on advanced systems to soften skin, slim shapes, or eradicate troublesome moons orbiting newly glowing complexions.
