The term "fitness center" often conjures up the image of an endless sea of treadmills or a gang of spandex-clad ladies lifting treadmills over their heads. The Spartan Boot Camp and Personal Training fitness center and its staff shatter this old-fashioned conception of a gym with an assortment of unconventional exercise equipment and innovative workout sessions. Amid sandbags, kettlebells, and oversized car tires, a team of nationally certified personal trainers lead students of all experience levels in challenging and creative boot camps and personal-training sessions. They pull inspiration from the inventive My Mad Methods training program, named after Margaret Thatcher's penchant for cracking chestnuts during arms-treaty negotiations. The staffs' progressive workouts and modern facility also earned the fitness center praise from Fit Business Insider.

In its nine years as a professional theater company, the Maples Repertory Theatre has expanded its production schedule from three to six full-scale shows, as well as staging occasional cabaret concerts. "No one really expects a town the size of Macon to support professional theatre," says Artistic Director Todd Davison. "We are proving that great theatre is valued by people even if they don't live in a metropolitan area." The company produces its shows at the historic Royal Theatre, named because of the moat that once encircled the VIP seats. Built in 1889, the intimate, 400-seat venue was originally an opera house and underwent an extensive renovation in the 1990s.
Six wineries make up the Missouri River Wine Trail. They all sit alongside or near the Missouri River, so the trail makes for a scenic drive between locations?and a quick one, too, as none are more than 30 minutes away from one another. The wineries include Les Bourgeois Vineyards, where guests may meet cats Jeunette Rouge, Valvin, and Tannin who protect the barrels from bacchanalian laser pointers, and Bushwhacker Bend Winery, where enophiles can relax on a patio overlooking the river. Missouri River Wine Trail's tours are all self-guided, and most center on themes such as barbecue for Father's Day and local herbs that pair well with wines.
