Wading through indoor heated pools, the instructors at British Swim School teach independent swimming skills to learners aged 3 months and older, adhering to a curriculum devised by British national swimmer Rita Goldberg. The 30-minute one-on-one sessions and small-group lessons, containing six or fewer swimmers, elucidate essential techniques for water safety and the importance of speaking fluent manatee. Swimboree (ages 3 months–3 years with parents) and Young Minnows sessions (ages 1–3 years without parents) teach wee swimmers basic water-survival skills, such as the back float. Turtle One and Turtle Two classes focus on freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke maneuvers, honing more structured swimming skills in older kiddos. British Swim School's Shark courses enhance stamina and speed and teach even more demanding strokes, such as the butterfly and little-known mountain-goat flail. Certain British Swim School classes require parents to participate in the water or to supervise from the pool deck, and adults-only lessons allow grown-ups to refine their own abilities without the supervision of a toddler.

Newbies earn PADI Open Water Diver certifications, while more experienced divers train in digital underwater photography (a specialty of Underseas), night diving, and rescue diving. For an extra dose of adventure, divers can explore tropical waters in areas such as Cozumel and the Grand Cayman Islands on the dive center’s organized trips. Before solo ventures at sea or in human-sized fish tanks, they can also shop for underwater gear by Aqualung, Light Motion, Scubapro and other top brands.
With an indoor lap pool, full basketball court, strength equipment, and 90 cardio stations filling its 40,000-square-foot facility, LifeStart at Central Park aims to be a one-stop fitness haven for the community. Cardio Theater equipment entertains brains as members run on treadmills, scale stair steppers, and tone legs on elliptical machines. Lifters can supplement their reps on the facility's arsenal of strength-training equipment with more than two-tons worth of free weights. After workouts, they can wipe away sweat with the complimentary towel service before relaxing in the whirlpool or deciphering the original US Constitution on Jefferson's antique mirror in the sauna and steam room.
When they're not leading personal-training sessions, instructors cartwheel over to LifeStart at Central Park's two spacious group exercise studios to helm fitness classes. In addition to leading cycling sessions, instructors demonstrate Zumba's easy-to-follow moves to the backdrop of global music and fortify core muscles in Pilates.
In the summer, most people flock to Meadows Swim & Tennis Club to enjoy the heated pools. The club has three of them—a six-lane lap pool, a junior pool, and a baby pool—as well as trained lifeguards on staff. But there's no shortage of activities out of the water. Guests can make rivals on one of two tennis courts or fuel festivities around the firepit and pig roaster.
