Steps from the SkyTrain, limbs reach toward the clouds and footsteps simulate thunderstorms? rumbles. Inside Urban Fitness Club, exercisers perform these ancient yoga poses and Latin-inspired dance moves as they admire downtown?s nature and architecture. As fun and buoyant as a bounce castle filled with helium, motivating instructors impart these moves during classes for students of all skill levels and body types. Boot camps, one of the club?s specialties, challenge cadets with a series of bodyweight exercises such as planks and burpees, which may be interspersed with cardio challenges such as step-ups and jump-rope drills. The club was named one of the three best boot camps in 2013 and 2014 by "The Georgia Straight Best of Vancouver." The brand new Urban Fitness Club in South Granville is located on the corner of Granville and 6th Ave., and boasts more than 1,500 sq. ft. of training area with ample free or metered parking nearby.

Over the course of life, the human body experiences natural wear and tear. However, Core Focus Training's mission has different plans in mind. Using an unconventional 10-week Core Focus course, the Canadian-based studio works participants towards their fitness goals by fostering long-term core strength, endurance, and agility. In addition to this class, a staff of certified Movement Specialists also lead personal-training sessions, fitness-rehabilitation programs, and boot camps.

Growing up in South Africa, head trainer Russel Sean Favel gleaned inspiration from his father, who regularly participated in various marathons, triathlons, and Iron Man competitions. Russel followed in those footsteps both literally and figuratively?he always shadowed his dad across the finish line until he was old enough to become an athlete himself at the early age of 6. He continued to foster this passion for sports through his college years, donning jerseys for both basketball and soccer. Today, he channels his lifelong love of athletics and physical fitness into his own studio, where he helps people shed pounds and prepare for a variety of physical activities with the myriad techniques he?s mastered over the years. Favel?s boot camps and personal-training sessions, which he designed to work all muscle groups, incorporate strength and cardio conditioning, as well as elements from martial arts and sports training. He cultivates an environment of motivation where he, his staff, and students are free to encourage and push one another. He rounds out the list of classes with spinning and yoga.

Get Fit Canada Boot Camp builds muscle mass and confidence through a combination of strength training movements and cardio exercises. Camps are lead by certified personal trainer Jenn Milne-Duddy, who helps trainees build lean muscle and burn fat rapidly in a team-like atmosphere. To further increase the chances of reaching fitness goals, camps are held in outdoor settings that most students find to be less intimidating than typical workout destinations such as the gym or the frozen turkey aisle.

Oxygen Hot Yoga & Fitness's owners equip each of their classrooms with infrared heaters, but it's the teacher's blending of workout styles that turns each class into a fitness melting pot. While infrared rays boost body heat to summon productive sweats, trainers strengthen cores and improve flexibility with a combination of yoga and Pilates. They don't just run the same sequence or routine in every class, either. They offer modifications and progressions on all exercises so that routines evolve as students progress, a technique which prevents people from getting bored and falling asleep mid-downward dog.

At age 18, Hadj Gill was a professional boxer with a 33-1 fight record in North America. He spent nine years in the pro circuit before seguing his boxing experience into a new athletic career: personal training. Gill inspires other athletes with the same motivational techniques that kept him competitive on the circuit, tweaking his boxing workouts to incorporate plyometrics moves that help build fast-twitch muscle. These tweaks have evolved into his signature workout system, Grind, which he teaches at Grind Athletix. Grind workouts focus on speed-training, cardio, or lower-body-toning plyometrics, such as lunges, hops, and other explosive movements that emulate the feeling of leaping away from a snake pit. Gill motivates his charges by working out right next to them and switches routines up in order to stave off workout boredom.
