Two Moroccan-style pouf chairs sit beneath an industrial wood and metal table, which in turn is weighed with antique books, sculptures, and a mirror in a carved frame. The scene might have come straight from a magazine shoot, but it's only a creative arrangement of the eclectic merchandise at Macalistaire at 1850. It's no surprise that shop owner Rachiel Macalistaire was inspired to open the store after her styling work was featured in home and style magazines. An avid vintage shopper, she filled the store with items from every decade, from a '50s wiggle dress to a '90s Y2K biohazard suit. Half the floor space is devoted to couches, dressers, mirrors, sculptures, and other eye-catching home items. Despite the range of goods, writers at Refinery29 wrote, "No need to spend a ton of time sifting through racks of clothing…every item from this carefully curated shop is tops!" The store also caught the eye of local press and grabbed the number-three spot on CBS 2 News and KCAL TV's top consignment shops in Orange County list.
Laguna Canyon Spa may be a touch off the beaten path?the wellness center rests at the edge of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park?but that just means the facility's surroundings match its tranquil interior. After all, it's there that massage therapists perform more than 10 massage styles, including the ancient techniques of Ayurvedic and shiatsu. It's also where yoga and Pilates instructors guide students through postures using mats, reformers, and wall tower equipment, and where aestheticians tend to aging, dehydrated, and acneic skin types using the muds and herbs of eight types of facials. But though the wellness center is usually as serene as a glockenspiel solo, it can still be a fun place to party. The center plays host to birthday and bachelorette parties, during which guests enjoy spa packages that can include jewelry making and henna tattoos.
Some people are fated to travel down a particular career path. With a surname that literally means "flowers," horticulturalist Ruben Flores may be one of those people. The Laguna Nursery owner and award-winning landscape designer fills the nursery with exotic plants, multicolor blooms, and flavorful herbs. He also gathers architectural artifacts and sculptures from local artists to inspire gardeners to augment their green spaces with artistic accents that don't involve hiring models to stand still above new blooms.
Laguna Florist's arrangers heft more than two decades of experience crafting nature into art by assembling seasonal bouquets and meticulous custom arrangements. Each of the three freshly cut Christmas bouquets measures 12.5"x9.5" and is set in a square, red glass vase that can later be reused as a lantern to guide Rudolph back to homes in the off-season. Other floral arrangements ($20–$25 average) can be purchased as gifts or to brighten living spaces. Customers can collaborate with the shop's resident floral artists to invent imaginative custom arrangements from handpicked flowers. The shop's helpful staff is also happy to explain helpful plant-care tips used by the pros to increase rose longevity and to train venus flytraps to belch the alphabet.
