A student of the sweet science for 35 years, Gary Ballard's career has taken him from his native South Africa to super middleweight champion under promoter Don King. Having hung up his gloves in 1998, Gary has been nurturing fighters and everyday athletes for 14 years at Ballard Fitness. The multi-purpose gym builds better bodies through group cardio boxing sessions, one-on-one personal training, and boxing classes for kids on Saturday mornings.
NAUI instructor trainer Becky Anderson has explored the ocean blue from the lingering surf of Southern California to the crystalline fresh water-caves in the Yucatan. Becky and Private Scuba's NAUI pro-platinum aquatic faculty share essential safety and technical skills with listening ears through NAUI courses and nitrox-based instruction for divers who want to explore deeper waters or move to Atlantis. The diving team builds foundations in beginning students and heightens skills for advanced students in hands-on classes. Private scuba instructors maintain a perfect safety record, tailoring programs to meet each participant's individual goals. After mastering the basics, students can achieve certification in dive classes, making use of the facilities at Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, or learn the intricacies of rescue scuba diving to retrieve lost kittens stuck atop exposed coral reefs.
Now in its 32nd year, Pacific Ballet Conservatory teaches the art of rhythm and poise inside four modern studios. Its highly trained instructors?whose international credentials stem from such centers as the Joffrey Ballet and the Dutch National Ballet?mentor both children and adults with an unflagging focus on personal development. Evaluations at six-month intervals gauge every student's progress in ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary styles. Pupils can also showcase their talents during the Spring Performance Series, which emulates professional theater productions with special effects and Muppet-filled box seats. Many dancers do indeed progress to the spotlight after their schooling, performing onstage at the San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, Gelsey Kirkland Academy, and even Disneyland.
A clear, confident speaking voice is often the key to success, whether in business or personal relationships. Elocution founder Dyane Filip learned that first-hand as a child actress, when she garnered roles in commercials, films, and theater productions thanks to her flair for communication. Now, she and her team of vocal coaches help others gain respect and success through clear speaking. During in-person meetings and Skype sessions, they familiarize clients with the sounds, rhythm, and intonation patterns of American English. They also work with clients to reduce foreign accents.
Artemis Defense Institute encompasses classrooms and three separate VirTra firearms simulators, or labs: one with a single screen, one with three screens, and one with five screens that completely immerse trainees in active, real-life scenarios.
Though no ammunition is used, simulators work in tandem with real Glock 22 and AR-15 firearms that have been converted for use with lasers and CO2 tanks to simulate recoil. Simulators also use an optional device called The Threat Fire, which gives shorts jolts of electricity to indicate being hit by incoming rounds.
Steven and Sandy Lieberman wanted to go into business together. That much they knew, but the husband-and-wife team didn't exactly have a specific business in mind. Maybe a bakery, maybe a laundromat?in the end, they stuck to what they knew: Steven's passion for firearms and self-defense. That was 2012. Since then, Artemis Defense Institute has drawn in everyone from the general public, to the Orange County Sheriffs department, to members of the Special Forces.
