Performance Factory Training doesn’t look like your average gym. Grunts and shouts echo off the rafters of the 5,000-square-foot facility, a cavernous warehouse that’s mostly empty, save for a smattering of kettlebells and cast-iron weight plates. The students here have little use for gimmicky equipment, as they focus on functional movements—pushing, pulling, squatting, and lifting, to name a few—that rely on body weight for resistance.
Though PFT’s instructors offer everything from personal training to football-specific workouts, their flagship program is CrossFit. This functional fitness phenomenon consists of a series of short, intense workouts that combine grueling strength and cardio training with basic gymnastics.
To prove that CrossFit’s for everyone, the instructors offer a two-week On Ramp program designed to get new students up to speed on the foundational movements. It’s hard not to get caught up in the daily workouts, seeing as how no two are ever the same. One day might involve shoulder presses and deadlifts, while another might require you to haul the tires of a car that was double-parked in the facility’s parking lot.

For those interested in the latter, there's Oasis Summer Day Camp. The camp, led by educators Brooke and James Schamber, entertains participants at the Winnetka or Highland Park campus with days packed full of events. Campers can hone their baseball skills, learn how to hula hoop, or swim at a nearby lake. They will also head out on field trips to a variety of swimming destinations, Wild West Town, Americas Action Territory, Green Meadows Farm, or stay at camp to participate in tournaments, art lessons, or obstacle courses. It's a formula that works: the camp has earned a Best of Winnetka Award for three years running as well as countless accolades from happy parents and fully rested video-game consoles.
The curated programs at Highland Park Medical Weight are highly personalized, combining medical consultations, counselor support, and nutrition regimens to help clients achieve their goals. Doctors develop regimens of weight-loss medications, and counselors create nutritional outlines and meet with clients regularly to monitor their progress and offer support. The staff members' work isn't done when clients lose weight, though. The doctors and counselors hold monthly support meetings after programs are completed so clients can maintain their weight loss.

On top of his own accomplishments, which include century rides, marathons, triathlons, boxing titles, and Ironmen competitions, he has helped others find their most fit selves by serving as a U.S. Navy Command fitness leader and a head coach to the ASU boxing club. Today, he and his staff—all of whom are former military or former boxing champions—at Toughman Bootcamp put their experience to use by helping clients obliterate calories and build muscle in bootcamp, boxing, and kickboxing programs.
