All veterans of the entertainment industry, the instructors at Ovation School for the Performing Arts don't believe in just instilling acting, singing, or dancing skills into their students. Instead, they impart all three, turning students of all skill levels into triple threats of stage and screen. Designed for kids and teens aged 5–18, the nonprofit's twice-weekly sessions are divided into 45-minute blocks whose subjects include acting, singing, and dance styles such as hip-hop and tap. Ovation also hosts private lessons focused on voice, piano, and guitar.
Arlene Santos’s love of dance has been a constant her entire life, starting as a childhood curiosity and transforming into a lifestyle. Since founding Lumina Academy of Dance in 2003, Santos has created a salsa curriculum that leads small groups through basic steps to advanced, performance-ready moves, all with an emphasis on salsa as a social dance. At her studio, she invites dancers to come with or without a partner and start at any experience level before she turns them loose at parties. Her classes emphasize lead-and-follow techniques, and she encourages her students to rotate partners so they can practice with various statures, experience levels, and numbers of feet. To complement the grace and rhythm of her dance classes, Ms. Santos also offers exercise-based classes such as yoga and hip-hop boot camp, which combines sweat-inducing moves with invigorating music.
At JayVee Dance Center, children learn more than the techniques to impress audiences. As they master ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop moves, they also gain life-long values, such as self-esteem, discipline, and a sense of responsibility. The youth classes—catering to kids as young as age 2—include the staple sessions, but also branch out into unexpected disciplines such as Tahitian hula and break dance, which boldly breaks all the rules of the Hokey Pokey. The adult schedule is just as diverse, covering fitness-oriented areas such as Zumba, pole fitness, and [Streetease], which is a saucy combination of pole fitness, burlesque, and hip-hop.
Were it not for the discerning ears of Harvey Kalmenson, the childhood classic All Dogs Go to Heaven and the popular video game Call of Duty might sound much different. Alternatively, under the skillful direction of Cathy Kalmenson, 329 voices lent their vocal talents for the 1992 Emmy nominated television mini-series The Wild West. Those are just a few examples of the Kalmensons' casting prowess in a long list of high-profile clients. The veteran husband and wife duo of voice-casting directors are the team behind Kalmenson & Kalmenson, a casting company that scouts actors for voice-over work (clients include celebrities such as Meryl Streep and Jim Belushi) and teaches the art of inflection at voice-acting classes. The companies also cast for commercials with a résumé that includes casting for the original Budweiser Beer frogs, Frosted Flakes' Tony the Tiger, and the voice of BMW.
Orlando Deral is a man of many talents. Using hi-definition cameras, he leads his staff in capturing images on both print and film. They also handle media needs in all stages, from storyboarding commercial spots to optimizing music videos for the internet. But the studio's real focus is on weddings, wherein a photographer and cinematographer help tell a couple's story through engagement reenactments or a rundown of their special day.
