Though they didn't always know it, Katie Maclaskey and Noelle Bertram have been complementing each other's fitness interests for much of their lives. As children, they sharpened their motor skills on the slopes and by the surf, respectively: Katie tackled snow sports while Noelle jogged, rollerbladed, and steered soccerballs across California's beaches. Their families owned neighboring restaurants, yet the girls didn't personally connect until they met on a run and realized their shared enthusiasm for exercise. When they both moved to Portland years later, they decided to combine their knowledge and drive to lead other women toward better physical health.
As certified personal trainers and owners of Adventure Boot Camp, Katie and Noelle invent their own workouts within the renowned franchise. They might craft outdoor obstacle courses, cardio circuits, or core-tightening drills for their students, but the encouraging spirit of their lessons never varies—the Lake Oswego Review lauds the "atmosphere of enjoyment and achievement" that pervades every camp session. In their leadership roles, the girls also continue to play off of each other's strengths for their clients' benefit. Katie has earned her ISSA certification as a nutritional consultant, and Noelle is a Sivananda-certified yoga instructor, which means they can show students how to simultaneously cook and balance atop a head of cabbage.
Fitness expert Christina Lucy founded Code Pink Boot Camp and has since expanded her fitness program into numerous locations throughout the western United States. Each of the trainers working for Code Pink claims extensive training and accredited certifications in the industry, and must undergo a strict audition to demonstrate their fitness prowess and knowledge of how many annual budgets each U.S. president could bench-press. With a schedule that includes several sessions throughout the weekday, the classes accommodate clients with varying schedules. During each session, instructors guide participants through high-intensity exercises that aim to incinerate fat, tone torsos, and improve overall well-being. The program caters to women of all ages and fitness levels and stresses safety, fun, and perseverance.
Master trainer and former Cincinnati Red Jerymaine Beasley has been recognized by MTV as one of the top 16 trainers in the nation. At Antidote Fitness & Nutrition, he and his staff of master trainers strive to make workouts fun, even hosting monthly events to create a sense of community and support. Jerymaine's team designs personal training programs to address each client's goals and physical abilities, often combining some form of cardio-conditioning, muscle-conditioning, flexibility, and nutrition. At Saturday morning boot camp, fitness seekers engage in group workouts that incorporate a variety of exercises. Camps for kids help little ones realize the importance of exercise and allowing mommy or daddy enough time to fill their three-nap quota for the day.
The workouts at Drenched Boot Camp get the blood pumping, the muscles working, and the fat burning in less than an hour. Each 45-minute high-intensity session is created and guided by Julie Arts, a National Academy of Sports Medicine–certified personal trainer and certified TRX suspension trainer who has the motivational prowess to power students of all skill levels through a challenging yet rewarding class. Her sessions at JJ Jump begin with a jump in the bounce house to get students' bodies warmed up, stretch out muscles, and wiggle into tight workout shorts. Julie then leads her charges through 25–30 minutes of obstacle-course races, squats, pushups, and burpees. The trainer happily modifies the workouts to make sure beginners and injured students are comfortable. After a five-minute cool-down session, students can strut out of class with a new sense of confidence and a souvenir jar of their own sweat. In addition to helping individuals reach their health goals, Julie has spent four seasons with Team in Training in order to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
For the the better part of a decade, Tyson Van Winkle played baseball in front of screaming crowds. He spent four years as a Gonzaga Bulldog, a career punctuated by winning the West Coast Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. That year, he was drafted into the minor leagues, where he spent another four years.
Now off the court, Van Winkle focuses on other athletes' performance at his new gym, ProLete Fitness. As a PCIP-certified trainer, he leads workouts ranging from personal training sessions to group boot camps, which burn fat more effectively than a set of combustible dumbbells. His sessions may incorporate high-quality Atlantis Strength equipment, or extras like movement evaluations and nutrition coaching.
