Though beautiful views and impeccable maintenance are typically found at long, difficult courses, the staff at Lake Oswego Golf Course believes that beginning and intermediate players should also be able to enjoy a top-notch course while learning the game. At 2,517 yards in total, the 18-hole, par-3 layout removes the physical stress of extreme length. Players can learn to hone in their game while golfing against the backdrop of Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams. Individual holes range between 74 and 179 yards, creating a hole-in-one opportunity on every tee box—provided a golfer can avoid Lost Dog Creek, outstretched tree boughs, and lost center fielders searching for fly balls.
Lake Oswego Golf Course's rates fluctuate throughout the week.
“We focus on all of our individual students, not just our competitors,” said instructor Jeff Patterson when describing what sets Northwest Fighting Arts apart from other gyms. At Northwest, students can take any of the gym’s classes or customize a package to suit their needs. Instructors specialize in popular martial-arts forms such as muay thai kickboxing, Brazilian jujitsu, and boxing, and they also offer harder-to-find styles such as jeet kune do and kali/eskrima. Though martial-arts classes themselves can provide an intense workout, Northwest Fighting Arts also has strictly fitness classes such as interval training and circuit training.
The experienced instructors at Aquatic Sports make it clear that they aren't in the business of simply doling out scuba certifications—they want to turn amateur divers into lifetime scuba explorers with safe, sensible training. Their teachers lead students in a heated pool through comprehensive refresher courses and basic scuba-certification courses that set divers on the path to independent diving. Alternatively, in the more advanced three- or four-week open-water-certification course, tank-breathers undergo classroom instruction for skills review and lessons in open-water conditions, as well as pool instruction for topics such as scuba emergencies and safety procedures.
Once they're ready to safely plumb the ocean depths, scuba-course grads can join scuba trips, with Aquatic Sports' staff handling all booking and arrangements. Before heading out to dive the Columbia River or the neighbor's above-ground pool, you can gear up at the in-house scuba shop, stocked with brand new diving and underwater photography equipment.
A practitioner of martial arts since 2001, Michele Moore realized at some point that most women and teen girls lack know-how when it comes to self-defense. To remedy this, she started EMPOWERED Fitness & Self-Defense as a side project out of a local dojo. There, she began teaching female students not only how to react during a confrontation, but how to avoid confrontations in the first place. Today, she operates out of a variety of locations around the Portland metro area, from gyms to parks. During private lessons, four-week programs, and monthly seminars, ladies learn how recognize and deal with potential threats, as well as how to discern between media-fueled hype and realistic situations in which crimes can occur. They'll also become competent in physical self-defense techniques so they can feel confident and at ease without having to carry a samurai sword everywhere.
Golf instructor Micheal Charles believes the process of learning golf should be as enjoyable as playing the game itself. From an early age, Charles became immersed in a life of athletic pursuits. His father was an international soccer star and a former head Olympic coach. Though Charles preferred golf over soccer, he still went on to an impressive career as a professional tournament winning player, as head coach of Lewis & Clark College and the University of Portland Women's Golf Team, and his current role instructing at Eastmoreland Golf Course. Instruction plans include private lessons to tighten individual aspects of the client's game and playing lessons where Michael plays alongside students while analyzing their course management skills and providing feedback on how to win any impromptu golf cart race.
