From the shores of Moses Lake, it's not unusual to see flocks of geese idling on the calm waters. But what might be striking is seeing a person flying 40 feet in the air propelled by a column of water. The team at Flyboard Funatix are the architects of such daredevilry, a process that starts by strapping the client's feet onto a special board. A 55-foot hose then connects it to a personal watercraft, which supplies the rider with enough pressurized water to send them rocketing into the air. Once in flight, riders can perform flips and spins or choose to jet through the water at up to 15–20 mph, officially making them a more able animal than the penguin.

As the owner and head trainer at Infinity Hunters and Jumpers, Heather MacDonald oversees an instructional regimen that has produced many local and national year-end champions. Depending on skill level, lessons inside the large screened arena range in focus from the short stirrup through upper level hunter, jumper, and equitation. All students—from beginners to showers—enjoy a supportive, positive environment, which breeds a solid ethical foundation so that riders aren’t tempted to promise a judge a handful of sugar cubes in return for a blue ribbon.

The Everett Rowing Association has been catering to novice and veteran rowers alike for more than three decades. Founded by Martin Beyer and Lynn Dykgraaf in 1982, the association helps aquatic enthusiasts of all levels hone their rowing skills. Newbies can enroll in a variety of introductory classes—some for adults, others for youth—that teach paddling basics as well as the little-known second verse to “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” Advanced rowers, meanwhile, can try out for the competitive Masters Team or the junior team for student-athletes.

Defending a castle wall against attackers sounds like a medieval pastime, but at DoodleBug Sportz’s outdoor paintball field in Snohomish, it remains an immediate concern. Armed with semiautomatic or electronic paintball markers, two teams battle over the wall, darting among manmade bunkers, or retiring behind the wall to shoot through its crenelations. Referees patrol the field, ensuring fair play, and the bunker layout changes weekly to keep games feeling fresh. Though DoodleBug Sportz offers rentals, players also can purchase their own gear from a company shop, stocked with paintball guns and key accessories for the sport, such as second paintbrush guns.

In the barrel room at Port Gardner Bay Winery, Chris Covington stays vigilant watching over casks of reds and whites with the anticipation and pride of a master winemaker. After learning that his engineering and chemistry knowledge could be put to use fermenting grapes and crafting unique alcoholic nectars, Chris began experimenting with the wine-making process, eventually producing his own wines independently. Today, Chris crafts vintages ranging from cabernet sauvignons and merlots to malbecs and gew?rztraminers, earning him a spot in Evening Magazine's "The Best of Western Washington". In addition to his day-to-day production duties, Chris also hosts frequent events, from tastings featuring live performances from local musicians to wine classes that discuss the wine-making process and dispel rumors that the best way to crush a grape is by breaking its heart.
