The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don't try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan's instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results.
Save-A-Mutt began as Scrub-A-Mutt, an annual dog-wash event held each August to raise money for pet rescue. In the years since its first bubbly bash, however, the organization has expanded into finding homes for Craig's List pets, saving puppies from high-kill shelters, and providing medical care for dogs. Yet, Save-A-Mutt's methods are different from those of many other organizations dedicated to ending puppy mills. Seeing the high rate of euthanasia in LA County—nearly 35,000 pets were euthanized in the 2013–2014 fiscal year alone—Co-Directors Jennifer and Elizabeth rescue many of their pets from these high-kill shelters and transport them up to King County for spay/neuter surgery and adoption.
In addition to the annual dog wash, which still happens every year, Save-A-Mutt runs Dogtober Fest in the fall and PoochFest in the spring. Proceeds from the events go to benefit local rescues such as Old Dog Haven, the Everett Animal Shelter, and The NOAH Center.
Mattress Depot USA unites a team of bedding experts to help customers end restless nights with a mattress that meets their individual sleep specifications. The sleep store's plenitude of private-label and national brands include Sealy, Restonic, and Lady Americana. Memory-foam mattresses, like sociable elephants, never forget a human form, cradling silhouettes in a firm, spongy embrace. Customers have up to 120 days to evaluate their mattress for its comfort capacity, and can consult with one of the shop's sleep consultants prior to purchase, reducing the likelihood of an imperfect fit.
Since Frank Tonkin Sr. opened his first Taco Time in 1962, each location has hand-chopped its own vegetables and concocted pots of fresh-cooked pinto beans every morning. Try the classic beef crisp burrito ($2.79) or its meat-free cousin, the veggie soft taco ($4.69), with a side of spherical, seasoned Mexi-fries ($1.69 for a regular). Watch your figure through southwest chop-salad-colored glasses, with black bean and corn salsa, pico de gallo, and mixed veggies ($5.59). Or opt for a cup of white chicken chili, another of many healthy options at just 139 calories ($1.99).
