The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don't try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.

Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan's instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results.

An award-winning artist, Evelia A. Sanchez passes her knowledge onto others during group classes at her pottery studio. She limits the amount of students—no more than six per class—in order to provide personal, hands-on instruction with pottery wheels and hand sculpting. Evelia also designs private lessons around students' specific goals, be they to learn a new skill or build the world's largest fruit bowl.

When David and Sheila Bath founded Leading Edge Gymnastics in 1990, they did so with a simple goal: to help kids build character through the sport they themselves were so passionate about. As their student base expanded and their programs flourished, that character-building mission remained. And along with self-discipline and positive thinking, the gym's students take home physical strength, agility, and really cool party tricks. The program now offers three levels for gymnasts, a competitive team for serious athletes, preschool programs such as Mommy and Me, and even birthday parties. Thus far, LEGA has five athletes attending college on full-ride college scholarships.

Gymboree offers a bevy of baby-engaging classes in which parents and wee ones work together to build tots' creativity and encourage development through play. Weekly classes are available for every age from the freshly born sapling to the five-year-young wise wanderer, though the school-skills classes are only available for ages three through five. The one-month membership includes rhythm-building music classes, imagination-expanding art classes, and Gymboree's most popular class, Play & Learn. The school-skills classes focus on building social, emotional, and intellectual skills that will come in handy for future endeavors such as growing up to be a kinder kind of kindergartener or becoming an award-winning kindergartner gardener. The month-long membership allows you to take one class per week, with make-ups available during enrollment if you miss a class. The 45-minute classes help to build an everlasting bond that will feel like being tethered to each other with Ethernet cable. This deal also includes unlimited attendance at Gymboree's open-gym sessions (contact location for schedule).

Since 1995, Best in Class Education Center's instructors have aided students of all ages—from pre-K tots to high school seniors—in their academic journeys. They calibrate small-group and private math and English lessons that push each student at an individualized pace, helping struggling students catch up to speed or edifying advanced pupils seeking more of a challenge. The tutors give homework assignments for the kids to work on throughout the week, as well as administer weekly tests to assess their progress.

In addition to boosting success in current classes, the staff helps older students ready themselves for post-secondary schooling with SAT prep classes and college admission workshops, which help applicants decide on the right place, craft an impressive personal statement, and shimmy into their dream school's mascot costume before campus visits.

There's no one template for success at Academic Success Tutoring. Instead, tutors use whatever mix of explanation, visual aids, and hands-on learning materials is most likely to help their students understand concepts in subject areas ranging from math to world history. Because the programs they design are so personalized, they're equally able to help struggling students ace their homework and give advanced students the support they need to pull ahead.
