Rick Hallor knows there's only one good way to hang a sweater. Keeping his customers' clothes from stretching out may seem like a small nicety, but looking out for people has been the central aim in every professional endeavor he's ever undertaken, whether it was personal training in Illinois or firefighting in Colorado. After relocating to San Diego to escape the frigid Colorado winters and boredom that stems from living in an almost-square state, he decided to put his helpful spirit to use in the dry-cleaning arena. He purchased Speedy Cleaners in 2011, and now he and his wife Calley work to extend the life of their clients' clothing within their homey and welcoming shop.
The family-operated dry-cleaning business not only cleans people's day-to-day garments, but also restores family heirlooms such as wedding dresses. Garment repairs can also be done onsite, as Rick's staff includes both a professional seamstress and a cobbler.
Each colorful confectionary centerpiece from Cookies By Design is crafted onsite from made-from-scratch dough using ingredients from local farmers. The bakers hand decorate each cookie bouquet onsite, personalizing select concoctions with signature icing themes and customer-dictated messages such as ”Happy Birthday” or "The Cookie Jar is Empty." Along with bouquets, cookies are baked and delivered in a variety of shapes and sizes ranging from sliceable cookie cakes to cookie baskets and can be embellished with any type of design, such as holiday-themed decorations or the official logo of a favorite sports team.
Someone stepping into a store dedicated to baklava might expect to be greeted by a display case packed with pastries. At Baklava King, this isn’t the case: not a single piece of baklava awaits potential customers. Unless, that is, they’ve placed an order, in which case Cevdet Ugur and his wife Sarka are most likely pulling it from the oven and garnishing it with chocolate sauce, chopped pistachios, or some other finishing touch before boxing it up and bestowing it on the customer at its peak of freshness. This utmost respect for fresh baklava is the crux of the Ugurs’ baking philosophy, which also calls for traditional Turkish recipes, domestic ingredients, and freshly squeezed lemon juice in the syrup that they drizzle over the tissue-thin layers of phyllo dough and customers who ask nicely.
Jungle Gym & Cafe combines children's activities, fitness classes, and a gourmet café complete with free WiFi and two flat-screen TVs that light up with NFL action on Saturdays and Sundays. Children can cavort across bounce houses and block pits or partake in basketball and badminton, while watchful parents dine on turkey wraps or Greek salads. Meanwhile, group fitness-classes practice cardio dance, yoga, and aerobics. Inside the medical spa suite, a doctor helps parents regain their youth with chemical peels, Botox, and vein repair treatments.
