Arthur Murray has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and The Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, The Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with instructors during private lessons and other classmates for group lessons as instructors assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.
Although breathtaking dance sequences sometimes feel like the domain of Broadway musicals or bygone ballrooms, they're alive and well at Park Cities Dance. The studio hosts a full range of traditional dance classes, with instructors teaching feet the moves from jazz, musical theatre, and ballroom traditions. However, the devotion to dance isn't simply an artistic one. Park Cities Dance also schedules Ballet Burn fitness classes, helping exercisers get in shape like the dancers they admire. Invented by former international touring dancer Margot Martin, the workouts blend elements of blends yoga, Pilates, plyometrics, and other cardio techniques with movements pull straight from the ballet playbook. The result is an exercise system that burns fats and adds stamina, agility, and muscle tone without the bulk associated with weights and strength training.
Fanny Kerwich, Lone Star Circus?s founder and current creative director, was born with the circus in her blood. An eighth-generation member of a renowned French circus family, she has been performing since age 6, delighting international audiences at Paris?s Lido and Moulin Rouge, Germany?s Circus Roncalli, and San Francisco?s Teatro ZinZanni.
Fanny?s performing experience and artistic vision now guide the nonprofit Lone Star Circus, which is a two-branched operation. Its performance troupe?s grace and athleticism shine during shows. The circus?s school hosts classes for adults and children throughout the week. Beginners? classes cover a variety of circus skills, from trapeze and aerial silk work to acrobatics and lyra, also known as aerial hoop. Learning to lift and hold your own body weight is a good way to get stronger and see muscle definition quickly.
