William Edwards Photography's studio, open in the Antelope Valley for more than 25 years, is really part studio, part playground. Outside, a tire swing hangs on a tree and a fire engine waits for kids to hop aboard it, and families can pose for natural-looking pictures on the portrait sets that occupy the studio's portrait park, such as country porch or a grassy area with a pond. But the team shoots portraits indoors too, snapping formal portraits, families posed around their beloved dog, babies napping in rug-lined baskets, or high school seniors preparing for college.
With just an inch of space separating pavement from pedal, the go-kart drivers at Willow Springs Racing zip around the facility's tracks, getting hands-on experience in beginner- or advanced-level racing techniques. Entry-level drivers can get behind the wheel of a 4-stroke Honda engine, which allows them to approach speeds of up to 50-mph while learning such basics as trail braking, sliding, and how to program the kart's pre-set radio stations. More advanced drivers, meanwhile, can climb into 125cc shifter cars and hit speeds of up to 100-mph or take control of full-sized Formula vehicles in courses designed to prepare racers for competition.
Camp Kindle, a Project Kindle program, holds events throughout the year—including nine-day summer camp sessions in the West and Midwest—that provide a safe, fun environment in which kids affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS can shed their self-consciousness about the disease and be open about their fears. During the camp sessions participants take part in a rich array of educational and recreational activities, including arts-and-crafts programs that help them find a creative means of expressing their feelings. Kids can work on bracelets, AIDS-ribbon lanyards, pictures for loved ones at home, and other artistic endeavors as they enjoy more than a week of social interaction that can strengthen self-esteem and relieve emotional stress. Campers attend Project Kindle's events at no expense to their families, including travel, meals, and program costs.
