These poses, part of a 26-asana sequence designed by yogi Bikram Choudhury, are intended to increase oxygen and blood flow through every inch of the body. Though the physical benefits of a stronger, more flexible body are undeniable, the good done to the mental and spiritual selves can only be described—a greater sense of peace, increased mental clarity, and the ability to tolerate people who talk about their night dreams. Intense sessions of hot flow, core yoga, fusion, and fluid flow classes test fitness limits while more relaxing disciplines of restorative, hatha, and luna yoga allow participants to center themselves and obtain inner balance. Some sessions feature a mix of movement and lengthening poses, including Flow into Yin, Heart & Soul, and yin yoga classes. At each of Oxygen Yoga & Fitness? locations, trained fitness instructors guide students through a seven-day schedule packed with yoga, boot camp, meditation, and TRX suspension training classes. The modern studios come equipped with infrared heated yoga rooms where students strengthen muscles during yoga poses as the specialized light aims to improve their skin tone and erase their cellulite. During TRX suspension training sessions, exercisers are suspended in the air by belts attached to the ceiling and use their own body weight to fight gravity. The classes are designed for all fitness levels and aim to build long, lean muscles and give guests a place to practice their levitation skills. The studio also schedules kids' yoga sessions designed to increase children?s confidence and provide full-body workouts.
Fitness Challenge is a self-described “work in progress gym” aimed at catering the gym-going experience to the needs of its clientele. That goal fits in well with its sub-moniker as the Real People Gym, playing up a philosophy that exercise is for everyone, not just those with Arnold physiques. The welcoming atmosphere makes it common to overhear friendly chitchat among other members between reps or to spot synchronized runs on the treadmill. Despite all the socialization, members mainly spend their time working up a sweat aboard Life Fitness cardio machines—either in the main studio or in the ladies-only room—and get a good pump going with Apex and Hammer Strength equipment.
A full schedule of group fitness classes, including Zumba, kickboxing, and boot camp, elevates heart rates five days a week, while Pilates instructor Joan Klucha targets core strength and flexibility with graceful muscle-toning exercises.
