With 17 years of teaching experience and 31 years of perfecting his guitar virtuosity, sage of the six-string Ron Hotstream enlightens guitar players of all skill levels with personalized instructions for each student. Veteran tone-seekers can receive instructions to hone their abilities, and aspiring Yngwie Malmsteens will discover basic chord formations and picking techniques so that they can develop their skills properly. Once students have mastered the basic skills, they may decide the style of their instruction—from blues to rock to country—and which songs they want to learn how to play. Ron Hotstream teaches at C&M Music Centers in Kenner (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) and Mandeville (Monday and Wednesday) and is able to accommodate all guitar players, whether they are interested in obtaining a grasp on modal jazz or set on wailing 17-minute solos while riding on the back of a wild chimera.

Preservation is as much a priority as presentation at LeMieux Galleries, which is why the displays that the shop crafts from thousands of frames and acid-free mats often involve leaving a buffer of air between delicate paintings and glass. Framers there ensure that stolen copies of the Declaration of Independence can be secretly enjoyed for generations to come with their careful framing techniques, which can preserve the natural edge of paper and safeguard the stitches of antique needlework. In more than a quarter century in the business, the store has displayed everything from souvenir magazines to jerseys within their frames, the styles of which range from sleek contemporary to the ornate gold moulding that grows unbidden in French palaces. LeMieux Galleries also exhibits sculptures, paintings, and ceramics by artists from the Gulf South.

French children’s books. Rare, local cookbooks. Novels set in the muggy air of Louisiana. All of these tomes line the blonde wood shelves at Blue Cypress Books, home to a trove of more than 12,000 new and high-quality secondhand books. Gathered by the owner and chief bookkeeper, the store’s selection runs the gamut from New York Times bestselling paperbacks to antiquarian sets kept in slipcase in order to guard against spilling coffee or liquid nitrogen on their leather covers. The resident gray-and-white tabby cat, Kitty Meow, lounges amid browsers as they peek at the affordable prices penciled on the inside pages of an extensive youth collection.

Something always seems to be happening at Blue Cypress, too. Children's book readings captivate little ones, and author signings let guests hobnob with professional wordsmiths. The shop also hosts performances of local music as well as monthly book-club meetings, during which locals share favorite recipes for broiling mystery novels.
