Before Max Abrahams was a music teacher, he was a longtime music student. Earning a degree in music from the University of Denver, Max concentrated in jazz music and bass playing. Additionally, on a sojourn in South Africa, he not only studied traditional African music at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban––he learned to play the zulu drum. He draws on his years of study, as well as stints playing with the Lamont Symphony and assorted jazz trios, as he teaches guitar and bass. His lessons start simple: during the introductory ones, he encourages students to strum out basic songs. However, the lessons soon ramp up to musical theory, sight-reading, and other higher-level material. He also helps his students branch out into a panoply of musical styles, from heavy metal to R&B to pop.

After graduating cum laude from Duquesne University's Mary Pappert School of Music, violinist Kendra Vernon went on to earn a degree in violin performance at Duquesne's Honors College. In 2002, she took the next logical step: sharing her hard-earned skills with aspiring violinists during private lessons. At Vernon Music Studio, she tailors each lesson to the needs of the individual to help students pick up skills quickly and thoroughly. All lessons are one-on-one and free of distractions, and there's a comfortable waiting area for parents.

The main attraction at the El Cerrito Swim Center is a pair of heated outdoor pools, which are open year-round for swimmers of all ages. The competition pool features eight lanes for lap swimmers aged 14 and older, while the recreation pool boasts three lap lanes, as well as shallow play areas, a fountain, and a water slide. Both pools keep a constant schedule packed with lessons, fitness classes, lifeguarding courses, and sea monkey speed dating, and in the summer, the recreation pool hosts open swim seven days a week. The pools are also home to area teams including the East Bay Masters Water Polo Club and the El Cerrito Gators youth swim teams. Those interested in more laidback activities can come by for Friday Family Fun Nights with themed music and games, or take advantage of facilities that include covered picnic tables, a grass lawn, and a barbecue area. The center also entertains guests with Splash Park, a water-fueled playground with fountains and an installation of colorful buckets that pour water over kids as they fill.

Mexico City native Ricardo T?llez began dancing when he was 12, shimmying his way through styles such as cumbia and guaracha. In 1995, he packed up his dancing shoes and moved to the Bay area, accelerating his salsa study not only by studying under Gabriel Romero, but also by trying out his footwork in clubs. Armed with a passion for dance, Ricardo founded RicaSalsa Dance Company in 1999 to share his love of the art. Today, he and dance partner Tianne Frias?with whom he placed third in the World Latin Dance Cup?teach private lessons and group classes that impart new and advanced dancers with the steps, partnership skills, and medallions filled with glowworms needed to light up the floor. By focusing on social dance skills and the ability to follow the rhythm, they help their students adapt easily to different songs and settings.
