Spinal surgery led Nina Waldman to Pilates. After her husband was injured playing professional basketball in Jerusalem—severely enough to require surgery—she became fascinated with Pilates, which he took up as part of his physical rehabilitation. Nina originally aspired to a career in sports medicine, but instead became certified in Pilates and opened two studios, one in Jerusalem and one in her native Las Vegas.
At Body in Mind, Nina and her staff teach Pilates, yoga, and spinning, as well as Candlelight Stretch. This class combines yoga, Pilates, strength training, and sports stretching, and is taught by candlelight. In addition to fitness classes, Body in Mind also stocks Juice Plus+ to supplement healthy diets.
Classes at the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Center stretch, flex, and push yogis of all skill levels, from novices to bone-defying experts, to new heights of fitness and relaxation. Iyengar yoga combines a focus on muscle-reforming standing poses with breathing and tension relief techniques, creating classes that soothe mental and physical tensions with a two-bird stone of flexion. Individualized instruction makes sessions appealing to beginners and easily adjusted to match the skills of seasoned veterans—yoga teachers watch, adjust, and encourage each class member, utilizing props such as blocks and straps to tailor poses all students.
With a background as a performer in the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School and a bachelor's degree in education, Yoga Sanctuary founder Sherry Goldstein is armed with the right tools to unify the mind and body. She has spent the last 20 years teaching the art of yoga to students of all abilities, including cast members from The Rockettes and Cirque du Soleil, and those super flexible kids on the back of Twister boxes. Along with her staff, she teaches beginners to advanced-level students with a wide selection of classes, including the high-energy, flowing poses of Vinyasa and the more gentle forms of restorative and therapeutic yoga. They also host meditative candlelight sessions, which are designed to calm the mind and relieve stress, as well as workshops with guest speakers and yoga hikes through the Red Rock Canyon.
Contrology Pilates makes individual attention its mission. The studio’s instructors tailor every workout to fit each student’s fitness level, and keep class sizes small to ensure they receive ample personal attention. Sessions employ classic Reformers, Cadillac suspension apparatuses, and versatile Wunda chairs to build flexibility and strength. Participants practice in Contrology's spacious studio, decorated with tall mirrors and green accents inspired by nature’s leanest vegetable, the string bean.
