Vanilla Bean Bakery?s ovens constantly churn out moist cupcakes, cakes, and cookies in a lengthy roster of flavors. Once the treats are cool, the bakery?s frosting artists decorate them using glaze, frosting, and fondant. With two to three days' notice, the team can create custom cakes to celebrate anything from baby showers to tax-filing day. Cupcakes come in luscious flavors such as red velvet, lemon, coconut, and peanut-butter cup. The bakery?s gallery of custom cupcakes showcases its decorators' diverse repertoire. They adorn dozens with prom proposals and fondant ghosts. In addition, bouquets of cake pops in flavors ranging from pink champagne to butter pecan brighten up parties, or patrons can opt for stickless arrays of cake truffles instead.

Operating out of the kitchen of an Episcopal church, the talented bakers at The Cakehole offer only customized, made-to-order treats. Their sucrose skills allow them to replicate stills from a movie for Oscar-themed cupcake trays or create a whole nest of Angry Birds-adorned cupcakes. Armed with sugar, water, and dye, bakers create decorative, multi-tiered cake art emblazoned with characters and themes from pop culture, comic books, and outdated tax codes. They can also fuse cakes and cupcakes together for a full mise en scéne, such as a zombie-themed wedding cake with accompanying cupcakes topped with tiny gum paste body parts.

Cultured Swirl's organic yogurt comes from cow's milk that is free of antibiotics, growth hormones, or artificial additives, the only addition being organic sweeteners. What it does contain is six live and active probiotic cultures and hefty doses of calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Though these treats aren't tricked out with artificial sweeteners, natural ingredients give them plenty of flavor.

In the shop, four self-serve machines are stocked with a rotating menu of flavors that range from pom berry tart and strawberry to Dutch chocolate and cheesecake. Each tasty cup can be filled with toppings such as hot Nutella, sea salt, and fresh raspberries. Customers can also sip on locally roasted coffee or the hot chocolate, formed from the family's secret recipe. Visitors then savor treats perched atop the shop's repurposed furniture, which is subject to change like the day's flavors, as it is also available for purchase. The old-fashioned playground swings dangling by the front window are permanent fixtures however, as the rocking motion they provide gives patrons a way to turn frozen yogurt into milkshakes if they so desire.

Because her daughter did not care for cake, Tuwanna Roberson baked enormous cookies yearly to commemorate her birthday. One year, she decided to hand-dip her daughter's favorite Oreo cookies in chocolate, creating a treat so delicious that her daughter felt compelled to share it with her teachers and school administrators. In February 2011, after the school began requesting the chocolate confections for fundraising efforts and as building materials, Louise's Sweets was born.

Tuwanna finds inspiration in the inventive methods bakers use to make cupcakes, adding flavors to her chocolate to create different flavor profiles and decorating each dessert with simple icing designs, such as onesies and snowmen. She's even adorned a bouquet of cookies with icing eyelashes as a gift for a stylist and as proof that cookies are self-aware. Other treats that receive Tuwanna's chocolate treatment include pretzel rods and rice-krispies treats, all made fresh to order and optionally arranged inside embellished vases.

Hovering high overhead, an oversized wing-bearing cupcake atop a thick polka dot-covered pole clearly marks the location of The Flying Cupcake in Indianapolis. Though connected to a series of walk-in, street-side buildings, The Flying Cupcake’s blue exterior is easy to spot. Inside, the décor is purposely rustic and successful in creating an old-style bakery feel, thanks to a simple, glass-covered display case, a sparse collection of hand-decorated multi-color tables and chairs and a chipped paint-covered booth. But cupcakes are the obvious focal point for guests here or at one of the facility’s other four central Indiana locations. Standard- and jumbo-sized versions, some filled with various fruits and crèmes, are available, as are gluten-free and even vegan cupcakes. Limited delivery service is also an option, as is event catering.

The people behind PEARings Frozen Yogurt and Beyond believe that simple can be delicious, and they work hard to ensure that their dishes use the purest ingredients available. Their certified real-dairy yogurt and greek yogurt contains at least four types of live and active cultures rather than the long-dead Phoenician culture, and their fruit toppings have never been frozen. They use Arabica coffee grown without pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers, and wraps are made with meats and vegetables from local farms. The company says it's trying to "[redefine] the self-serve frozen yogurt concept" with indulgent flavors—sea salt caramel pretzel and Tahitian vanilla are favorites—high-quality ingredients, and a slew of non-yogurt offerings for breakfast and lunch.
