To help women achieve their fitness goals, the certified personal trainers at Get In Shape For Women focus on four areas: weight training, cardio training, nutrition, and accountability. In small group sessions, trainers modify exercises to suit up to four ladies' fitness levels, beginning by calibrating strength-training sessions—such as free weights, lunges, and squats—to each client's abilities while still ensuring they are challenging themselves. Then comes high-intensity cardio interval-training sessions in which trainers encourage exercisers to achieve optimal results on the treadmill or elliptical.
The trainers supplement the group workouts with nutritional planning centered around the concept of eating six small, balanced meals six days a week. They set aside the seventh day as a "free day" for a bit of indulgence, be it eating a favorite sweet or lusting openly after bacon. To hold their women accountable, trainers talk nutrition on the floor during scheduled appointments, and the ladies' progress toward reaching their goals is measured by trainers each week.
SpinCity Training Studio’s team of spin instructors and personal trainers joins forces with a registered dietitian and licensed massage therapist to provide clients with a comprehensive road map to wellness. Rather than offering run-of-the-mill spin classes, trainers customize programs to address each client’s specific goals, which may include injury rehabilitation, sports training, weight loss, or muscle improvement. Prior to the workout, instructors manually adjust each cycle to the rider’s unique posture to facilitate the best possible speed, comfort, and spinal rigidity during routines that take individual fitness levels into account. They then run students through a gamut of low-impact body conditioning performed to a motivating score of music and car horns. After classes, the studio’s onsite dietitian can balance workouts with a three-day food analysis and a four-week nutrition program. The facility also lays claim to Cybex Arc Trainers, treadmills, and strength machines to round out exercise routines. An onsite locker room and shower facility sluice away post-workout perspiration, though patrons must dry off with towels brought from home.
Bikram Choudhury requires a lot out of his teachers before he's willing to let them borrow his moniker. Each of Bikram Yoga Merrimack Valley's instructors has completed the nine-week course required for certification with Choudhury himself, including more than 600 hours of training. Every three years, they return for another bout of training to keep their skills sharp and instruction fresh.
Instructors pack all this knowledge into Bikram Yoga Merrimack Valley's 1,500-square-foot workout space, heated by a custom system designed to reach high temperatures with ease. The studio owners respect the environment with low-eco-impact carpeting, green cleaning supplies, and by frequently thanking the potted plants that guard the front door.
Power Yoga Evolution welcomes first-time guests and experienced practitioners alike with hot power yoga classes that take place on the hardwood floor of rooms heated to 95 degrees. Experienced instructors lead students through postures that can be easily modified based on each person’s level of flexibility or subconscious urge to do handstands. Each teacher maintains a daily yoga practice and has training in yoga philosophy, anatomy, and physiology to provide personal care and guidance during every class.
A biplane?s mechanized propellers whir. A satellite spins on its axis. Such are the Lego inventions of students enrolled in Bricks 4 Kidz?s after-school program. The blueprints for these miniature gadgets spring from the mind of Michelle Kote, who saw the potential for Legos to introduce young learners to architecture, engineering, and science. She draws upon her own background as an architect to create model plans for Lego creations with kid-friendly themes such as amusement parks, famous buildings, and outer space. Students work together in small groups to replicate these models, honing their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills along the way.
