Inside Penguin Pete's Cool Treats, patrons decorate swirls of frozen yogurt with toppings such as fresh fruit, candy, and popping boba pearls that burst with sweet juice. Rich in calcium and probiotics, the frozen yogurt helps strengthen bones, boost the immune system, and promote healthy digestion, among other benefits. Servers also scoop traditional ice cream and prepare sundaes, banana splits, and Arctic pizzas layered with soft-serve and sweet toppings. All-beef hot dogs round out the menu, and in the winter months, comforting soups and savory wraps are available.
Owner Renee Pratt-Snively of Renee's Fine Cakes harnesses more than two decades of baking expertise and a pastry apprenticeship at Niagara College to forge a daily menu of sweets crafted from gourmet ingredients. The cake emporium specializes in fulfilling custom orders, tackling challenges to mix and match any combination of cake, filling, and frosting or to bake cream puffs so light they defy gravity. With proper notice, the staff can whip up sugar-free and dairy-free delicacies, cloak moist morsels in elegant fondant, or decorate cakes with personal photographs, hand-drawn designs, or custom colours. Renee and her dedicated dessert maestros also sling more than 20 varieties of tortes and a hodgepodge of miniature pastries ranging from brownies and éclairs to dipped strawberries and thimbles full of pudding.
Since 1918, Blak?s Bakery has prepared a large variety of sweet and savoury baked goods with care and ages-old know-how. Although the bakery is small in size, it is known for boxing approximately 24,000 paczki per year on Fat Tuesday?a feat that earned the attention of CBC News. In addition to paczki, the bakers create an array of goodies, such as mincemeat pies, 9-inch cakes, and breads, which are baked in the original 1918 Peterson brick-hearth oven instead of on the engine block of an overheated car.
Before Pam Turkin flung open the doors to the first Just Baked in 2009, she was just baking cupcakes on the weekends. But after her corporate travels took her past a growing number of cupcake shops outside of southeastern Michigan, she decided to turn her hobby into a career. She now helms 17 shops in the area, where she and her staff of dessert experts whip up eclectically flavored cupcakes such as red velvet cheesecake, chocolate chip cookie dough, and grumpy cake. In addition to the mouthwatering flavors, all of their items boast real butter, real eggs, and real milk as opposed to artificial ingredients from artificial cows and chickens.
In Sweet Piece Dessert's bustling kitchen, pastry-bag points dispense tufts of frosting that rest atop cakes shrouded in fondant or swirls of buttercream. Custom cakes match the color schemes and themes of their surroundings at weddings and birthdays, and character cupcakes resemble favorite kids entertainers, such as Hello Kitty and Henry Kissinger. Confectioners also daub apples and pretzels with layers of chocolate drizzle, peanut butter, cashews, and roasted macaroon coconut, and dip strawberries in rich candy coatings.
The 50 different toppings available at Yogurtown—which can include everything from strawberries and pineapple to Kit Kats—change each season. But the self-serve shop's 10 yogurts rotate weekly, helping yogurt lovers get their hands on a lot of different options. Past offerings have ranged from reliable standbys such irish mint and chocolate, which comes fat-free. Yogurtown's treats can be enjoyed inside its cheery white-and-pink storefront, where live DJs occasionally spin a string of popular hits rather than trying to make music come out of frozen yogurt swirls.
