Dogs seem to love getting dirty but hate getting clean. The team at Max the Dog Wash streamlines the process. Waist-high tubs let owners comfortably wash their dogs, scrubbing out fur with brushes and raking out tangles that are havens for dirt in a chorus of gentle splashing sounds and baritone barks. After bath time, owners can reward their best friends with dog treats made in the shop or pictures from the mailman’s awkward high-school years.

The four trainers and two instructors at Rushlow’s Arabians combine more than 150 years of experience in the equestrian industry, applying their expertise in the areas of breeding, training, and riding. Rather than focus solely on riding techniques in the saddle or trying to teach horses sign language, riders learn the full spectrum of horsemanship, including equine anatomy, proper stall etiquette, and tacking up a horse. Students of all abilities have their choice of instruction in Western, Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, Driving, and Dressage atop designated lesson horses, most of which have retired from the show ring.

It's not quite enough for animal-lover Lindsay Archer to spend time with pets all day long at her day job as a veterinary technician. So she opens her home to pets whose owners need a few days away. Beyond taking in dogs and cats, she also watches other domestic animals, such as guinea pigs.

Inside a spacious 6,000-square-foot facility, Christine Fox, a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, and her staff provide training, daytime and overnight boarding, and grooming services for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Daycare and overnight-boarding services provide canines with ample indoor play areas and individual walks, during which a trainer reinforces basic commands, such as “come,” “heel," and “stop leaving the toilet seat up.” Multiple exercise sessions also teach socialization techniques, wearing pups out for tranquil rides home. The facility also houses separate areas for small and senior dogs to ensure places for them to play safely.

During group training sessions, canines learn basic etiquette, such as to come when called and how not to pull on the leash. Dogs can also go on to learn more advanced commands, graduating to agility training or acting classes to teach them how to obey commands in busy film studios. Individual training sessions offer one-on-one attention, either in the home or at the facility.
