Hands dig into the springtime earth, heaving up tufts of Missouri dirt cooled by the nearby waters of historic Jowler Creek. The year is 2004 and Colleen and Jason Gerke are trying their hands at winemaking, planting 250 norton grapevines in the ground near their home. Today, the 7-acre plot of land houses more than 3,000 vines, protected by insect-consuming chickens, rodent-hunting hawks and owls, and weed-noshing sheep who graze at carefully managed intervals. The sustainable vineyard sprouts grapes used to concoct nine award-winning wines?from dry to sweet?which are crafted with solar-powered devices. Jowler Creek Vineyard and Winery regularly hosts tours for up to 30 people, where patrons spend approximately 90 minutes observing the crash-diet techniques grapes undergo before squeezing into Jowler Creek's trademark baby blue sealed bottles.
A stroll through La Rouge Spalon & Boutique is a promenade back in time. In the waiting room, a cherry-red leather sofa and black shelves inspire modernity; in another room, the proprietors channel the 1950s with striped walls and checkered floors. In a separate makeup room, six round palettes of foundation and eye shadow rise up from a table like the drum set of a 1980s hair band from the stage. This diverse variety of styles characterizes La Rouge Spalon, which embraces the changing times with sleek cuts and bold color highlights tailored to client preference. Healing wraps and infrared sauna sessions help detoxify the body while promoting relaxation and weight loss. Clients may also solicit La Rouge for a chip-resistant Shellac manicure, or nix unwanted hair from upper lips with a private waxing session.
When it comes to losing weight, the team at The Body Wrap Spalon knows there's no substitute for diet and exercise, but they augment weight-loss efforts with a menu of advanced body wraps. The signature Slim wrap uses a blend of minerals and heat to draw out excess water and toxins, and the Men's Gut Buster shrinks belt sizes by targeting the midsection.
But body wraps are just one of the ways the team gets clients looking and feeling their best. They also deep-clean pores during facials and evaporate tension from the shoulders, neck, and back during custom massages.
