The JA Titan of Industry Challenge is a worldwide online competition that begins locally in high-school classrooms. Teams of three or four students use graduate-level computer programs to manage a virtual company, collaborating as they control all aspects of the business, including pricing of goods, production, marketing, research and development, and charitable giving. The repercussions of students' decisions are reflected in regular reports of profit, sales, and market shares. Teams must learn the nuances of competing in a global marketplace to succeed, and the top performing team in each classroom is invited to attend the San Diego County-wide JA Titan of Industry Competition on Friday, December 9th, where they get the chance to win savings bonds, laptops, and an opportunity to compete internationally. It costs the organization $40 for each student to participate in the classroom simulation, including costs for materials and training, and Junior Achievement of San Diego & Imperial Counties would like to sponsor 30 teams of students in the event.
At each of several one-day festivals held throughout the country, thousands of revelers unite in an epic clash of pulp, beer, and live music. Armed with a cache of 300,000 tomatoes, participants don protective bathing suits and goggles and hurl the fruit at one another during a two-hour battle. Throughout the afternoon, live music and costume contests offer an entertaining respite from the front lines, as bartenders dispense drafts of beer to attendees older than 21, refueling soldiers' morale before they resign to writing goodbye letters to their produce vendors back home. All tomatoes used during the event are past ripe and already fated for disposal, making the battle an efficient means of tossing them before their cursed transformation into singing Muppets.
With room for only 20 oenophiles within its tasting quarters, Proprietor’s Reserve Wine Bar crafts a menu of regional dishes designed to complement the establishment's colossal selection of wines. The next tasting event, the Best of France meal, features six Franco-influenced dishes and six carefully matched wines, with each bite and sip enhancing the other in a flavorsome tag-team taste-bud assault. Past dinners have highlighted the cuisine of other regions, including South Africa, a meal that boasted unique small plates and entrees such as diced chicken slathered in apricot-ginger sauce and wine-braised short ribs with crème fraiche smashed potatoes, and a gathering dedicated to Moffett Vineyards' wines featured epicurean cameos by risotto studded with spicy sausage, garlic, chive, and leek paired with a selection of C&T Cellars sauvignon blanc and pinot noir.
The trainers at Family Gym eschew the one-size-fits-all approach to fitness, understanding that people at different ages require different resources.They cater to a range of developmental phases, making them the perfect family gym. While parents take advantage of babysitting services, they can attend group fitness classes that the trainers scale to each individual's fitness level. These sessions are based on yoga, salsa dancing, and martial arts, and are held in both English and Spanish.
At Get Centered Clay Studio, instructors teach fledgling clay artisans the basics of slinging, spinning, and molding ceramic works in a fully equipped facility. During each two-hour private instructional class, participants will learn a brief history of clay making, as well as the foundational skills necessary to hand form clay, spin symmetrical pieces on the potter's wheel, or sculpt lifelike busts with their minds. Budding artists can then hone their craft on amorphous clay blobs, becoming familiar with the materials and the wheel. Although students will not create a fully finished piece, they will leave equipped with the know-how to make ceramic water jugs and full-scale concept cars in the future.
Sponsored by the San Diego Army Advisory Council, the Community Salute to Heroes 5K Crossfit Race celebrates and benefits American do-gooders including first responders and military families. The race begins at Grossmont High School, with heats taking off from the starting line at 15-minute intervals. As runners navigate the 5K course, Army representatives will greet them at the end of each kilometer with optional CrossFit exercises. Because the CrossFit stations are optional and most people can’t read military time, runners will not be timed.
As the runners make their way toward the finish line, the festivities continue around them. The mayor of El Cajon will oversee proceedings as the master of ceremonies, and a two-star general will be on hand to swear in more than 100 future soldiers. Spectators can take in musical performances by the Heroes throughout the day, or send little ones to the Kiddy Corner for bounce-house sessions and other activities.
Jeff Roberto, a sushi expert, brings a plethora of experience to his San Diego sushi oasis. He has catered large events of up to 16,000 guests as well as the sets of such Hollywood films as Titanic, Pearl Harbor, and Elizabethtown. Inside SOAR (Sushi On A Roll) he constructs specialty rolls filled with shrimp tempura, seared tuna, spicy scallops, and sashimi and nigiri rolls featuring fresh water eel and squid.
Roberto also leads group explorations in the art of sushi preparation during interactive sushi-making classes held inside a private sushi bar. Two-hour classes commence with an assessment of how many edamame you can stuff in your cheeks before you begin tucking vegetable fillings in sheets of seaweed with the help of a bamboo mat. Students jot down notes on the proper consistency of sushi rice, when to sprinkle rolls with sesame seeds, and how to repurpose chopsticks as the mast of a ship-in-a-bottle.
A koi mural provides the backdrop for the expansive 30-seat sushi bar, which is outlined in neon to highlight the dramatic curve of the space. The expansive venue, which accommodates up to 100 people, is popular among large groups of friends looking for a fun outing and U.S. senators playing hooky. Free parking is also available.
