When D-BAT opened in 1998, Cade Griffis was one of only two employees (the other was his brother, Kyle). But Cade knew that he had everything he needed to succeed, starting with a strong training philosophy shaped by his professional and college baseball careers.
Cade's philosophy is simple: every player should follow a unique game plan, tailored to his or her strengths. As straightforward as it sounds, it works wonders when applied consistently. Cade has helped many budding ballplayers grow into power hitters, and somewhere along the way his small facility transformed into a baseball empire with 19 high-tech training locations.
Today, veteran coaches staff each of the climate-controlled facilities. They have a variety of tools at their disposal, including pitching machines that shoot balls at custom speeds of 70+ mph. On flat-screen TVs, parents can watch their kids improve their batting form and master the art of juggling all the bases at once.
Whether learning how to surf the endless wave during a wake-surfing lesson with pro wake-surf pioneer Tyler Marshall, or serenely building up endorphins, balance, and strength through standup-paddleboard classes, DFW Surf has a team of professional instructors ready to help students of all levels master the world of watersports. Besides offering introductory standup-paddleboarding lessons at the metroplex, they also offer fitness classes on and off the board, including Lake Set Fitness and SUP Yoga. Part of what makes DFW Surf one of CBS Local’s 2012 Best Extreme Sports and Rec Spots in North Texas is its promotion of both community spirit and fitness, in addition to its commitment to the growth of inland surf sports through club memberships, monthly cleanups of trash in the lake, and events such as the DFW Surf Open.
Austin Fit Magazine named RockBody Boot Camp its Best Boot Camp of 2011 and also lauded its owner, Brian Prinzo, as one of the city’s Top 10 Fittest Trainers in 2010. But for Brian and his staff of experienced trainers, it’s not about the accolades; it’s about helping others lose weight and reach their fitness goals. Classes eschew routine courses of treadmills and bench presses for a variety of challenging workouts that put participants through a mash-up of strength, core, cardio, and interval training designed to push them to their personal limits. Best of all, the workouts provide the motivation and accountability needed to help exercisers push past plateaus, and exercises can be tailored to accommodate many fitness levels and concerns, such as arthritis, body pain, and conjoined sweatbands.
As a high-schooler, Natalie Tailford became hooked on the sense of peaceful floating that comes from practicing yoga. Later as an adult, she found a way to get that feeling of inner floating both literally and mentally. After spending years in a cubicle, she left the corporate world and ventured out on her own to open Float On Yoga. She graduated from the Divine School of Yoga Therapy, and, as a certified yoga therapist, her average workday now includes meeting clients in breezy area parks. Using the calming waters of Lake Grapevine and Lake Lewisville as studios, Natalie or another Float on Yoga instructor teaches yoga to up to five pupils at a time as the class floats on standup paddleboards. The hybrid classes follow the mantra "Breathe, balance, float," which seeks to align body, mind, and water wings as students practice watery asanas and cobra poses.
Certified trainer, AJ Tucker, acquired myriad methods of staying fit while playing college football, training for jui jitsu, and during his four-year service with the U.S. Army. Today, he molds all that experience into a three-day-a-week boot camp that incorporates strength straining, a specialty class such as boxing, and a session designed for fun where participants buddy-up and complete a more light-hearted session of exercises. He also offers private boot camps that can be held at the office, school, or front yard.
