When Lynette Carter walked into her first Zumba class, she weighed 230 pounds. When she walked into her most recent Zumba class, she weighed 120 pounds, and waved hello to her students. Today, Lynette owns PGR Family Cardio Club, an all-ages fitness facility based around Zumba. She uses her own story of transformation to help motivate and inspire new exercisers. Lynette and her instructors know that each attendee starts at a different level of physical fitness, and so they tailor classes accordingly, even holding special sessions geared towards teaching kids or seniors. "You don't have to be a dancer, or in top ... shape to attend any of our classes," she says. "Just come ready to have fun and burn all the calories away."
Zumba instructor Samantha knows that, despite its fiesta-like façade, Zumba has real effects: she’s lost 35 pounds and toned her muscles since starting the practice. At Dance Integrity, where she teaches her classes, she shares these high-energy, dance-inspired workouts with others. The calorie-torching routines don’t require any previous experience, though participants should make sure that their sneakers aren’t too shy to dance.
The instructors at Fitness Mania Studio love a good party, at least when it comes to their Zumba classes. To create a fiesta-like atmosphere for each, they pump international tunes and dress a full-body workout in the guise of high-energy choreography—much of which is inspired by Latin dance. Each session welcomes students of all experience levels, creating a fun, supportive environment.
After eight months of taking Zumba classes, Dominique Lasha?e had a sudden realization?this was the longest she?d ever been committed to a fitness routine. The now-certified Zumba instructor, who has owned a marketing and event company for more than 16 years, combines her party-planning experience and love of Zumba workouts to host infectious dance parties and fitness conferences. Drawing from a range of easy-to-follow international dance moves including Latin styles, hip hop, meringue, reggae, and cumbia, she helps guests of all ages and abilities achieve their fitness goals while simultaneously preparing them to reign victorious in-office dance-offs that determine who gets promoted. High-energy international tunes fuel guests as they shimmy and shake their way towards overall well-being.
Ashley Bristo leads every Zumba class as if it were a party. Admittedly, these parties use dance-inspired cardio exercises to provide an invigorating, full-body workout, but the pulsing Latin soundtrack and infectious energy help keep students' moving. Attendees don't even need any previous dance experience since participating is as simple as watching Ashley perform the easy-to-learn moves and then following her lead. Regular exercise is rarely enough to see true weight loss though?regardless of how often students attend or how many layers of chainmail they wear to the studio?which is why Ashley also offers nutritional guidance intended to help people begin making healthier lifestyle choices outside of class.
