The sky's the limit at Bella Forza Fitness, where students get fit, not on the ground, but suspended above it. Here, the specialty is aerial-silks classes, which are a mixture of aerial dance and acrobatics designed to lengthen and strengthen limbs, develop core and upper-body strength, and improve balance. New students begin by learning moves closer to the ground, which helps acquaint them with the aerial silk––a fabric apparatus mounted to the ceiling. As students acquire new strength and master increasingly harder lifts, drops, and poses, they'll begin to string movements together into fluid routines and, gradually, to perform them at greater heights.
For those who prefer to stay grounded, Bella Forza also offers boot camp and strength and mobility classes that strengthen the entire body and can lead to faster progress on the silks. And for fans of yoga and Pilates, the studio's aerial yogilates classes show students how to perform classic yoga and Pilates moves on the aerial silk, allowing them to experience total freedom of movement and add an air of realism to their pigeon pose.
As a lifelong equestrian, Emilie Goddard has ridden horses in many disciplines, including hunt seat, trail riding, and vaulting. But as the head instructor at Pemberley Riding Academy, Emilie teaches dressage, a style of riding she is most passionate about because of its grace, beauty, and distance from rush hour trail traffic. As she trains to compete at the Grand Prix level of dressage herself, Emilie coaches new equestrians in the discipline, while also mixing in basic english equitation and jumping skills. Students as young as 4 are encouraged to test their skills and build upon past successes, with the end goal of emerging as a safe and efficient rider. Emilie also expands on the lesson curriculum with camps and mini clinics, designed to create well-rounded equestrians through topics such as equipment, barn upkeep, and horse breeds.
Leigh-Ann Mims, the owner of Elle Fitness, brings her knowledge of BarreAmped directly from her studies with Suzanne Bowen, the creator of the BarreAmped method. During classes, she and her students stand at a ballet barre as they perform challenging poses and small, isolated movements, which are inspired by modern dance, yoga, Pilates, and deep stretching. These movements are designed to strengthen the entire body, and lengthen muscles to work toward dancer-like lean gams and arms. The method sometimes takes students away from the barre to the floor to perform ground work and stretching, or outside where they can photosynthesize sun into muscle fiber, like a body-building fern. In addition to the traditional BarreAmped classes, Leigh-Ann also leads the more advanced BarreAmped Fire and the six-week BarreAmped Boot Camp series.
A welcoming space for groups throughout the community, Mecca Live Studio & Gallery houses more than mere dance classes. When not filled with students and instructors learning the art of belly dancing, flamenco, or ancient hula, the grounds play host to the pomp-filled practice sessions of the March Madness Marching Band. Nationally recognized belly-dance performance company Rakadu also calls Mecca home, as does Hallwa, the performance company's musical counterpart. The studio’s dance instructors also stay busy outside of class. When not teaching beginner through advanced overviews of timeless Terpsichorean arts, they also collaborate with local artists and community groups on events ranging from theater productions and annual parades to the tango portion of local political debates.
