As a busy student at the University of Kentucky, Nathan Spitz needed a quick and effective workout that he could squeeze into his demanding schedule of classes. That was how he discovered CrossFit—an innovative fitness program that involves an ever-changing tapestry of high-intensity workouts consisting of functional movements. Nathan Spitz became so enamored with the exercise form, he went on to pursue a CrossFit instructor certification. Today, he's a coach at CrossFit Maximus.
With two locations in Lexington, a 9,800-square-foot facility on Palumbo Drive and a new 7,000-square-foot facility at National and North Ashland Avenues, CrossFit Maximus boasts onsite massage centers, a childcare center (not available at the National Avenue location), CrossFit classes, boot camps, kids' fitness courses, and nutrition classes. During sessions, they draw from the gym’s arsenal of functional strength-training equipment, including free weights, medicine balls, and slack lines. Through group training and support, the team strives to create a communal atmosphere where everyone knows your name and a supportive space where everyone refrains from menacingly whispering it in unison.
With locales dappled throughout the Southeast and Midwest, the brains behind Workout Anytime funnel more than three decades of fitness-industry expertise into filling their gyms with positive vibes and state-of-the-art equipment. The fitness gurus spread Magnum-brand strength-training machines and cutting-edge treadmills—whose frames can support up to 500 pounds—throughout their hygienic antimicrobial floors. They also provide certified personal trainers, nutritional guidance, and weight-loss plans.
Workout Anytime's doors are open to members 24 hours a day every day of the year, permitting access to public exercise zones and areas that offer tanning and massage sessions. Each gym also strives to cultivate a familial atmosphere with staffers who memorize each guest's name and carve each one's Thanksgiving turkey.
Regardless of the fitness level of the client they’re training, J&M Strength and Conditioning owners Jim Laird and Molly Galbraith work to instill the fundamentals of their well-rounded training style. Rather than overloading their clients with lengthy daily workouts or forcing them to push a little engine up and over a hill for the symbolic impact, the duo suggests that clients come in two to three times per week for a high-energy boot-camp session. To maximize the effectiveness of each workout, the trainers give each student personal attention, tweaking their techniques and exercises when necessary to accommodate clients’ fitness level. Regardless of how much experience they have with boot camp training, clients learn to perform routines designed to burn body fat, strengthen muscles, boost energy and mood, and mute bodily aches and pains.
We offer Health and Wellness Training Classes to individuals of all levels of fitness from beginner to the more advanced. Each class is similar to a group personal training session. Each class includes an extensive warm-up, followed by strength training, and then a conditioning session for maximum results in minimal time.
The sky's the limit at Bella Forza Fitness, where students get fit, not on the ground, but suspended above it. Here, the specialty is aerial-silks classes, which are a mixture of aerial dance and acrobatics designed to lengthen and strengthen limbs, develop core and upper-body strength, and improve balance. New students begin by learning moves closer to the ground, which helps acquaint them with the aerial silk––a fabric apparatus mounted to the ceiling. As students acquire new strength and master increasingly harder lifts, drops, and poses, they'll begin to string movements together into fluid routines and, gradually, to perform them at greater heights.
For those who prefer to stay grounded, Bella Forza also offers boot camp and strength and mobility classes that strengthen the entire body and can lead to faster progress on the silks. And for fans of yoga and Pilates, the studio's aerial yogilates classes show students how to perform classic yoga and Pilates moves on the aerial silk, allowing them to experience total freedom of movement and add an air of realism to their pigeon pose.
