To merely call Mr. Kaves prolific is to understate his colorful career as an artist. The free-spirited owner of Brooklyn Made Tattoo came of age in the tunnels of the New York City transit system, where he began crafting elaborate graffiti murals before he hit his teenage years. These murals caught the attention of other local artists—not to mention the NYPD. As his persona grew, Kaves moved on to more legal forms of self-expression. He made a name for himself as an MC for the hip-hop group Lordz of Brooklyn and started crafting commissioned street art for companies such as MTV and Adidas and artists such as Beastie Boys, Metallica, and Everlast.
At his boutique tattoo parlor in Bay Ridge, Kaves continues to find new outlets for his creativity. When he doesn't have a mic or an aerosol can in hand, he expresses himself with tattoos that feature elaborate lettering and full-color imagery. Kaves and his team of incredible artists create lively tattoos six days a week at the shop.
Unless you go back in time and track yourself down, there's only one of you in the world. The story of The Indus3 begins, as many good stories do, with a quest. In 2009, an overworked Elder Marmeleira himself from a regular nine-to-five job in search of a new means of helping other similarly stressed individuals look and feel good. Soon Elder realized that his budding hairstyling skills were his ticket to a new kind of life.
After countless hours spent honing his craft and fine-tuning his now-signature techniques, he opened The Indus3 salon. Now, with the help of stylist Jenny Viana, Elder continues to uphold his vision of lifting each client’s spirits by transforming their appearance through a host of personalized salon services tailored to individual tastes and styles. On any given day, the team can be found at styling stations, gilding locks with flattering highlights, installing volume-boosting extensions, or straightening curl-laden manes with meticulous flat-iron services. Along with strand-enhancing treatments, The Indus3’s crew also offers makeup applications and performs facial waxing services to streamline upper-lip fuzz that spells the name “Charlotte.”
When preparing to work on a new tattoo, Sinjed repeatedly assures his clients that his equipment is sterile and his studio is safe. Those same promises don't extend to his work itself. With his needle, Sinjed turns crossed forearms into city skylines, backs into altars for patron deities, and abdomens into scenes of lions on the savannah. The artist specializes in black and white designs and portraits, which means that clients can finally memorialize a fallen relative or bring to life that dream about Steamboat Willie playing chess with Death.
The stylists at Shockwave Salon share over 40 years of experience as they deftly tend to heads of hair in an airy studio space painted with bright reds and greens. They apply new looks with skilled hands that snip off excess locks, deep condition, or style dos. Additionally, Saturday nights see the salon filled with live music that enhances an atmosphere already packed with posters that pay homage to rock, punk, and jazz musicians.
