Run by Anna Maria Florio, the daughter of Italian immigrants, La Cucina at the Market imparts vital culinary arts to its students in intimate, informative classes. Students plunge their hands into the world of handmade pasta in Making Handmade Pasta: Easy as 1, 2, 3, which runs through the art and science of noodle and sauce. In classes of up to 15 people, pupils knead, roll, and slice pasta dough to infuse homemade Italian entrees with a personal touch. Nascent noodle artists acquire the art of lengthy fettuccine and broad pappardelle, and afterward pastacrafters will be able to construct an edible sculpture of a penguin in formalwear using bowtie-mimicking farfalle.
In addition to the sense of perseverance and accomplishment that comes with finishing a 5K, the organizers of the Bacon Chase have added another incentive: bacon. During their two races?the 5K Piggy Pilgrimage, which is a traditional 5K, and the 0.05K Blitz to Bacon, which is a 164-foot sprint?runners can munch on unlimited bacon bits before feasting on unlimited amounts of bacon at the finish line. Runners 21 and older can wash down the savory strips of bacon with a bloody mary, and all runners get a Bacon Chase T-shirt and a signature bacon-scented bib. The festival opens at 8 a.m. and features many bacon-themed activities, plus music.
The festive day serves a greater purpose, too. Attendees will be able to register to become a St. Jude Hero, raise money for St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, or both.
First opened in 1968, the Electric Factory has been hosting rock shows for almost as long Puerto Rico has been a state. After dancing their faces off to headliners from Erykah Badu to the Dropkick Murphys, concertgoers can stop by The Chive Caf? to recharge with a cheesesteak or an all-beef hotdog on a potato bun, or refill their draft Yuengling at the bar. In summer, the Electric Factory reveals an outdoor location complete with more refreshment booths, vendors, and upgraded food stands.
FringeArts doesn't just provide a soapbox for some of Philadelphia's most experimental performance companies and artists. It also introduces audiences to challenging and vibrant theatre, art, and music from around the world?all with the intent of creating dialogues that bridge cultural boundaries. The center achieves this through year-round programming but its core program is the annual Fringe Festival. Every September, this two-week celebration takes over the city with a year's worth of work from contemporary performers and visual artists from Philadelphia, New York City, and around the world. With no creative or curatorial restrictions, performers are free to take over traditional theatres or entire parts of the city. Events might include whimsical stage plays, art installations, or roving performances that transform streets and other buildings into stages.
Sound Excursions describes their carefully curated group experiences as "field trips for adults." It's easy to see why: every outing takes groups to a new realm of Washington, whether it's the frothy shores of Puget Sound, inland forests and mountains, or tables at Seattle's thriving restaurants. The events held at these diverse locations range from culinary workshops on topics such as sushi-making and moonshine-tasting, to adventurous excursions with whitewater rafting or kayaking, to laid-back themed party cruises. For many outings, luxury transportation is provided.
Tents and tables cover the grassy, waterfront lawns of Lake Lenape Park East for a two-day celebration of good eats and sips at the Waterfront Wine & Food Festival. Vendors work alongside students from the Academy of Culinary Arts to prepare fresh cuisine and stage cooking demonstrations, while winemakers pour samples to throngs of attendees. An outdoor wine garden provides a designated space to sip and dine while socializing, and guests can peruse hand-crafted gifts to take home to a loved one or someone they just owe a favor to.
Though most of the festival is unstructured, one of its core events is an amateur wine competition, where judges sample guest submissions of red and white wines designated as sweet and dry hybrids, vinifera, and soft or stone fruits. Live music from Atlantic City lounge singer Beth Tinnon and a steel band provide a lively soundtrack throughout the two-day shindig.
