A member of the American Montessori Society, Monarch Montessori School leads a variety of programs designed to educate children in the critical development period between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 years old. Infants experience exercises that encourage sensory development and learn important motor and language skills through speaking and song. Toddlers work to improve their language and motor skills while grasping new concepts such as socializing and counting. Kids in their primary years develop more advanced, abstract concepts such as curiosity, respect for others, and responsibility.
A member of the United States Fencing Association, Rising Stars Fencing Academy sharpens skills in all three styles of the sport: foil, sabre, and epee. Founder and head coach Gary Dubrovich came to the U.S. from Belarus in 1989, and ever since, has instilled in his students exceptional technique and a modern understanding of the sport. At the RSFA facility, students of all experience levels thrust and jab through private lessons, group classes, and open bout sessions every day of the week.
It’s a typical night at Mickey's Bar and Grill—sports games glisten on rows of flat-screen HDTVs, upbeat jukebox tunes fill the air, and friends crowd around the bar, calling for shots of Jack Daniels and pints of Guinness. Bartenders bustle about behind the bar, whipping up the martinis and mixed drinks lauded by reporters from The Record. Servers emerge from the kitchen, bearing platters of plump buffalo wings, juicy burgers, and mini sliders. Some nights, daring guests take the stage for karaoke, boldly belting out popular tunes or whispering confessions of overdue library books into the microphone amid the cheers and applause of the boisterous audience.
Vibrant red, yellow, and blue walls envelop a plethora of weightlifting and cardio machines in Body & Soul Core Fitness’s main room. While lifting barbells or twirling legs atop treadmills, patrons can watch flat-screen TVs or peek through the windows into the cardio-kickboxing room lined with red heavy bags swinging under the force of swift kicks and punches. The gym’s classes also include Zumba, DanceSports, spinning, and circuit training. Those interested in more individualized attention can take part in one-on-one personal-training sessions with the gym’s experienced instructors.
At Revolution Cycling Studio, founder, certified spin expert, and personal trainer Traci Sakellakis leads a team of instructors who know firsthand how life-changing—perhaps even addictive—spinning can be. Class leader Jennifer Giordano became hooked on cycling almost by accident: one Saturday afternoon 10 years ago, her brother invited her for a "leisurely" bike ride that ended up stretching a whopping 33 miles. She rose to the occasion, and now encourages others to meet their own fitness goals. Additionally, fellow staffer Christian Ramos was overweight and out of shape before he started cycling, but has since lost more than 80 pounds and helps students do the same.
Motivating shouts and energizing beats from the sound system keeps students’ heart rates high as they pedal within the small, intimate studio. Some classes even feature themed music, such as tunes by "one-hit wonders" or a celebration of the British Invasion. Throughout the workout, the computerized Star Trac spinner bike provides continuous feedback on the exercisers' heart rate and distance travelled. The crew incorporates weight training and ab work into some sessions and also offers teen classes that are ideal for adolescent people or full-grown Keebler elves seeking stress relief.
