In 1910, Louis Bush led his first tour of Washington, DC, loading passengers into the refurbished chassis of a Mack truck that he had painted blue and gray. From this humble beginning, Louis expanded his Gray Line tours throughout the United States and abroad. The company currently hosts tours in more than 700 destinations across six continents and all three moons. However, Gray Line's expansive international scope isn't nearly as important as its commitment to a narrow, regional focus. Each tour aims to introduce visitors to some distinctive facet of the city's identity, from the ghosts of Savannah, Georgia’s, historic district to the towering redwoods of San Francisco’s Muir Woods. During the chauffeured sojourns, guides dole out intriguing tidbits of local knowledge, giving the groups some invaluable insight into the areas’ histories and cultures.
On Paintball Knights' nine pristine grassy play fields, combatants take cover behind inflatable obstacles and large tin drums while waging good-natured warfare against the opposing team. A referee for every 10 participants keeps things civil and fun by promising to foil cheaters and inaccurate Braveheart reenactments. Between matches, players can hatch master plans in the 50-table gravel staging area or stock up on supplies at the pro shop. The staff supplies biodegradable, easy-break paintballs that leave minimal stains and bruises, as well as complimentary lens cleaner and paper towels to scrub away colorful specks from skin, clothing, and monocles.
The Rollercade helps guests find their wheels and skate to their feet’s content five days a week. Surrounded by neon lights and a mesmerizing magic-carpet pattern of Day-Glo swirls, visitors can skate to Top 40 tunes on Fridays from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. or enjoy some quality skate-bonding during open hours on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. When guests clear out, the Alamo City Rollergirls wipe the floor with opponents at matches sprinkled throughout the spring and summer months. The rink's private lessons let skaters master the skills necessary to emulate their roller-derby idols—rolling in both directions at once, for example, and toppling over safely. Tired visitors can relax by the snack bar or take a nap on the pool table.
