The FAA-certified instructors at Future Eagles Aviation put clients behind the controls of actual aircraft as they teach them the ins and outs of aviation. Students amass skills such as navigation and cockpit familiarity on the ground in adventure flight school before lifting off in a Cessna 172 training aircraft for 30 minutes of flight time. Kids can also take to the sky during Future Eagles Aviation’s youth aviation summer camp, a weeklong foray into the world of cloud skimming and Peter Pan mimicry during which kids aged 10 and older practice on simulators and log real flight hours in training aircraft.
More than a century ago, an industrious farmer named Gerard enlisted the help of bees to pollinate his family estate. Inadvertently, the buzzing insects fertilized a new passion for Gerard, one that would become a family tradition.
Four generations later, Gerard’Z Honeybees' bustling hives create more than a dozen local and monofloral honeys from such plants as star thistle, orange blossoms, and avocado blossoms. Because the honeys are completely raw and natural, they maintain the micro-nutritious qualities often left out of industrial varieties, and they may help allergy sufferers to acclimate to their local pollen varieties.
Gerard’Z holds year-round beekeeping workshops and honey tasting seminars at local wineries, nurseries, and farmers’ markets throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley. During the classes and tastings, bee experts demystify the process of maintaining a hive, and people get the chance to taste the difference between clover honey, buckwheat honey, black sage honey, and Doritos honey. Gerard’Z also helps to maintain the delicate honeybee population by finding homes for wild swarms or colonies that have built hives in unwanted places and might otherwise fall prey to exterminators.

Aloha Mind Math's certified teachers strive for one goal: to free students from the tyranny of calculators. They’re aided in their fight by the center's Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic (ALOHA) curriculum, a program designed by a panel of mathematics experts to mitigate students’ mind-melting reliance on machine-based calculation. Teachers lead students through weekly after-school classes that increase mental processing abilities through fun, interactive lessons, keeping classes small to ensure all students receive ample attention. Though primarily focused on math, teachers also host reading and writing classes that increase literacy, reducing the chance students will accidentally sign contracts to forever trade their chocolate milk for pieces of chalk.
The instructors at Kims Academy help grade-school and high-school students perform better in the classroom or on standardized tests. With 20 years of teaching experience, director Stephanie Kim—who also codirects the Scorehigh tutoring facility—professionally trains her team of experts. Working one-on-one or in small groups, the instructors provide students with tools for tackling SAT and ACT tests or improving writing and math skills. They answer tough questions on subjects such as grammar, constructing research papers, and whether it’s possible to learn through osmosis by using a textbook as a pillow.
With five branches and over 80 franchised learning centers in the United States and Canada, JEI Learning Center has found international success, including an educational TV station, thanks to its model of self-paced learning.
Prospective students begin with a diagnostic test to determine their ability level, at which point they'll be placed in groups with a maximum ratio of five students to one instructor. Sessions are held weekly, one hour per subject––there are Common Core State Standards aligned with curriculums in math, language arts, reading, writing, and problem solving––with provided workbooks and daily homework exercises.
