Daniele Ferrara Jarman was drawn to the playful inversions and tranquility of yoga after her career as a gymnast. This led her to first create and found Exhale Yoga Studio, then later the Ignite Yoga Center with Agnes Tengerdy. They view Ignite as a center that promotes holistic healing and strengthening through fluid yoga classes and chakra therapy. Classes range in intensity in order to accommodate yogis of all levels, including kids’ classes, beginning yoga that introduces the foundational moves, and Yoga Dynamics Advanced, a rigorous practice that keeps bodies moving, like a jogger who has stumbled onto a golf driving range.
Ignite Yoga Center also offers Yin Yoga with Chakra Therapy created by Agnes Tengerdy, an innovative class that combines Yin yoga’s deep stretches and colored lights that activate the body’s chakras. Guests breathe deeply and slowly to create a centered, relaxed state of mind, as the lights stimulate individual chakras to create a balance of mind, body, spirit, and rave.
Within Hills Fit Studio, exercisers embark on transcontinental rides without ever leaving the comfort of Livingston. Their stationary sojourns begin atop the fitness studio's fleet of high-tech indoor cycling bikes, which come equipped with clips on the pedals, no-slip handlebars, and water bottle-holders. Calibrated for both beginning and advanced riders, spin classes send participants over simulated hills and flatlands on rides synced with the tunes that bump from the studio's sound system. All workouts unfold within the fitness studio, a cozy, boutique-like space with flourishes including pristine hardwood floors and wall-length mirrors.
Energy surges through Powerflow Yoga, in the sunbeams that pour through its windows and the bodies that bend beneath its recessed lights. Here, experienced instructors guide yogis of all levels toward tranquility in balmy temperatures that help loosen tight muscles, oust pent-up toxins, and melt cheese wheels for after-class fondue parties. Overhead fans circulate fresh air, which students inhale during deep-breathing exercises that focus the mind and invigorate the body. During hot Powerflow Vinyasa classes, the group practices arm balances and inversions, which can be modified to accommodate injuries or challenge advanced students. Shaped by several teaching traditions, including Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Jivamukti, this class showcases yoga’s power to hone bodily alignment and cultivate inner peace. Warm Yin sessions provide a calming counterpoint with lengthy poses that gently stretch the connective tissues. After class, students can retire to the changing rooms, where showers await to whisk away sweat beads.
To help women achieve their fitness goals, the certified personal trainers at Get In Shape For Women focus on four areas: weight training, cardio training, nutrition, and accountability. In small group sessions, trainers modify exercises to suit up to four ladies' fitness levels, beginning by calibrating strength-training sessions—such as free weights, lunges, and squats—to each client's abilities while still ensuring they are challenging themselves. Then comes high-intensity cardio interval-training sessions in which trainers encourage exercisers to achieve optimal results on the treadmill or elliptical.
The trainers supplement the group workouts with nutritional planning centered around the concept of eating six small, balanced meals six days a week. They set aside the seventh day as a "free day" for a bit of indulgence, be it eating a favorite sweet or lusting openly after bacon. To hold their women accountable, trainers talk nutrition on the floor during scheduled appointments, and the ladies' progress toward reaching their goals is measured by trainers each week.
Like many med-spas, Advanced Laser Center uses lasers to combat unwanted hair and beam away wrinkles. But unlike most, the facility's lasers are also calibrated to help patients quit smoking or lose unwanted pounds. Medical aestheticians help lift sagging faces sans surgery with IPL skin-tightening treatments that inundate collagen with waves of infrared light, causing tissues to contract and faces to appear more youthful. Injections of Botox and Juvéderm also smooth and shape facial contours, and chemical peels with glycolic or salicylic acid dislodge dead skin by accelerating the natural process of exfoliation. To ensure patients leave healthy from head to toe, they also aim the cosmic technology to conquer toenail fungus, preparing feet for display in flip-flops or glass clogs.
Formerly known as the Wellness & Tranquility Center, Shakir Whitehead of The eLements Spa was unsatisfied with the way people would shrug off pain as an unavoidable product of aging, especially when there were more probable triggers such as diet, stress, hair color, and lack of exercise. Drawing on this idea, and the deep appreciation of his friends and family for his incredible backrubs, he decided to become a licensed massage therapist. Now in the comfort of his own private studio, Shakir can alleviate chronic tension with flowing Swedish strokes, or address lower-layer aches with deep-tissue or trigger point therapy. When not befriending muscles, Shakir befriends his community, volunteering his time for Whole Foods and Susan G. Komen charity events.
