Jeff Glebe studied massage at the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy. After graduating in 2001, he opened Michigan Therapeutic Massage to help people get through their body aches and discomforts and lead fuller lives. His first order of business was to assemble a staff of nationally certified therapists who also honed their skills at accredited institutions and in the real world. All male and female therapists are graduates from the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy and are nationally certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. All that education shows during massage sessions that aim to decrease muscle pain, soothe tension, and make clients' elbows jealous of their backs. In addition to their talents at the massage table, the group also spends time continuing their studies to stay on top of evolving techniques.
Certified holistic practitioner Denise Strauss opened Vivo Wellness Center to improve clients’ quality of life through holistic services administered by experts certified in their respective fields. When not busy flushing away waste with colon hydrotherapy or restoring range of motion with therapeutic massage, practitioners also oversee BioMat therapy and far infrared sauna sessions, which help to alleviate joint pain and purge toxins from the body with the power of light. Denise and her staff also better bodies with nutritional assessments, ensuring clients receive enough nutrients and don't lack any substances such as essential vitamins or trace elements only found in chocolate-chip cookies.
For Dr. Gregory Hicks, the phrase "you are what you eat" rings true. The experienced chiropractor has devoted more than 30 years to helping patients overcome ailments with a combination of traditional chiropractic care and custom nutrition plans. During nutrition response tests, he lightly presses on strategic points across the body to trigger a physical response other than the sound of an antique car horn. Dr. Hicks can then ascertain the relative health of organs, muscles, joints, and glands. To get bodies back to full functionality, he outlines a wellness plan that can incorporate a blend of corrective exercises, herbal supplements, and whole-food diets.
HealthQuest's nonsurgical treatments have raised many eyebrows in the sports world, especially around the locker rooms at Ford Field. The center often finds itself the temporary home to some of Detroit's gridiron greats, who take advantage of the staff's non-invasive chiropractic treatments—which combine the power of pulsed laser light and traditional chiropractic care to alleviate knots and aches—to stay in Sunday shape. Non-football clients also find relief, consulting with HealthQuest's doctors on treatments to increase blood flow, decrease inflammation, and promote soft tissue healing.
Pistons player Tayshaun Prince may have a few feet on Dr. Shuyun Xu, but when it comes to treating pain and walking through doorways without ducking, she’s the star. A photo of the towering NBA player and Dr. Xu on her website shows the pair beaming after a session, speaking to the adeptness of her skills and the warmth of her personality. Both her talent and joy stem from a life spent helping others. Dr. Xu’s quest toward holistic healing began when she was 5 and started learning traditional Chinese techniques from her mother and grandmother. She went on to study at some of China’s leading universities and hospitals before importing her skills to Troy Acupuncture Center. Here, her patients reap the benefits of her learning through acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion treatments.
All three traditional Chinese practices aim to unblock chi—energy that flows through the body along channels. Through the insertion of fine acupuncture needles, pressure from cupping, or the burning of moxibustion’s signature herb, Dr. Xu frees blocked chi and helps assuage a plethora of conditions ranging from insomnia and smoking addiction to infertility and hypertension.
