Dr. Damon Thornton has called central Florida home for more than 46 years. After graduating with honors from Parker College of Chiropractic, he opened this clinic with the hopes of assuaging pain and boosting health in his own backyard. His office specializes in chiropractic care, which differentiates itself from other branches of medicine by seeking to treat the whole body rather than simply squashing symptoms as they arise. A variety of services, including physical therapy and spinal decompression, aims to realign the body?s operating system to alleviate chronic pain and uninstall unwanted Sudoku apps. Dr. Thornton also hopes to fend off health issues before they start through nutritional counseling. In addition to overseeing a lineup of facial and body rejuvenation services, he supervises a team of licensed massage therapists, who treat soft muscle tissues to the revitalizing touch of massage and bodywork.

Led by a certified massage therapist and aesthetician, Kamour Spa invigorates weary skin and tension-plagued muscles with facial and massage services. Clinicians apply pharmaceutical grade products over the face to loosen wind-worn layers of skin before gently whisking them away with light exfoliation and a nearby helipad. Skincare salves hydrate healthy pores and stimulate cellular turnover while the newly revealed tissues beneath exhibit diminished signs of sun damage and lines formed in the shape of your age. Clients also enjoy a 20-minute torso-unwinding massage of the upper chest, neck, shoulder, arms, and hands under the tender touch of a therapist. Upon completion of services, complimentary posttreatment healing products offer a week's worth of additional daily care and emit face-inspired lullabies.

A visit to the Maitland makeup studio ensures you'll be glowing like that smug neighborhood glowworm for your next date or meeting with the Minister of Defense. Opt for a full makeup application ($65–$85) and experience the beauty-boosting effects of the KROMA product line, created by owner and celebrity makeup artist Lee Tillett from all-natural ingredients and featured at swanky soirees such as the 2009 Academy Awards and the 2009 Emmys. Or, if wild and woolly brows are obstructing your view of downtown high-rises and low-flying helicopters, opt for an expert brow shaping ($45–$55) to make your best features pop. The friendly brow wranglers rein in unruly and rebellious eye awnings and shape arches to complement your specific eye and bone structure.

Muscular System: The Meat of the Matter

The joys of a massage or the relief of a chiropractic adjustment?and the stresses of physical work?play out partly in the muscles. Learn just what pumps the body up with Groupon?s guide to the muscular system.

The human body has more than 630 muscles keeping it upright and mobile. They make up almost half its weight and power the movements of the bones, the blood, and even the food in the stomach. Perhaps the most familiar muscles are those seen in bodybuilding contests and facial-expression contests: the skeletal, or voluntary, muscles. They?re attached to our bones and controlled by our brains, which zap them with electrical signals to cause their fibers to contract. During a muscle contraction, filaments inside the muscle fibers slide together, stacking up on one another so that the larger fiber shortens. In shortening, the fibers gain thickness?a phenomenon we notice as flexing. Whatever muscles do, they accomplish by this single pulling action. If a bicep (part of a category of muscles known as flexors) flexes to lift a barbell, it needs a tricep (an extensor), pulling in the opposite direction, to bring the arm back down.

The other two types of muscles are smooth muscles and cardiac muscles, and both are beyond our conscious control. Cardiac muscles control the beating of the heart, contracting the chambers to push blood throughout the body. But the blood doesn?t ride to the toes on that momentum alone. Lining the blood vessels are smooth muscles that help push it along. These also line the esophagus, stomach, and intestine to move food through the digestive track, and can even help regulate the body?s temperature by opening and closing capillaries near the skin surface, all without conscious effort. The subconscious brain is also happy to turn muscles to ends beyond their apparent purpose: for instance, what we experience as shivering from cold is simply the brain causing the muscles to spasm so they will generate heat and keep your blood and any baby chicks in your coat pockets warm.

The aestheticians and massage therapists behind Quiet Whispers Mobile Spa make sure their clients don't even have to leave their houses to enjoy a spa day. Instead, they bring a range of massages and skin treatments right to their front door or drawbridge. Some of their more exotic, eastern-inspired treatments include Shiatsu massages and Shirodhara oil treatments, which draw from Tibetan traditions to settle the mind and body simultaneously. Many of the sessions also incorporate natural elements, softening skin with Dead Sea mud wraps or invigorating senses with lavender-infused scalp massages. The staff can also host makeup and spa parties to celebrate birthdays, bachelorette parties, or weddings.

Each of the signature facials or massages at Tinna's Spa comes from a licensed professional, so it's a given that the results will help to heal and relax. But, for the team here, highly effective treatments aren't good enough. They've worked hard to create an atmosphere conducive to relieving stress, and that's exactly what you'll find when you walk into the spa and take a look around at the Eastern-inspired decor. Of course, the treatments remain at the center of everything. Try a rejuvenating facial designed to cleanse and refresh, or opt for a massage to forget all about the minotaur that just moved in next door.
