Texas Health & Racquet Club's owner, Randall Lavender, started his fitness career in the Navy, where he developed exercise regimens to keep men, women, and submarines in tip-top shape. At Texas Health & Racquet Club, his dedication to fitness is readily apparent: besides providing guests with access to state-of-the-art resistance training equipment, free weights, and cardiovascular machines, the gym offers a diverse array of group fitness classes ranging in discipline from cycling and body combat to Zumba and yoga. The crew at Texas Health & Racquet Club also offer personal training sessions, as well as other amenities that help make exercising easier, such as child-care and nutritional guidance. Members can also make use of on-site basketball and racquetball courts, and, afterward, they can relax in the sauna or atop the gym's hydro massage bed, which can help relieve pain and stress in just 10 minutes.

At River Place Country Club, a championship golf course designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Kite, winner of the 1992 U.S. Open, invites golfers to launch balls over sand bunkers and twisting creeks that wend their way through the landscape’s hilly contours. The course’s superintendent draws on experience at Baton Rouge Country Club and Colonial Country Club, as well as a degree in Plant and Soil Systems, as he ensures that the greens and rolling Bermuda grass fairways are more carefully manicured than a prize-winning pet wooly mammoth. The course’s PGA professional instructors are on hand to improve individual games, and a driving range lets players practice at 15 hitting stations.

Adjacent to the course, eight lighted tennis courts abut a 40,000-square-foot clubhouse with an outdoor pool, fully equipped fitness center, and locker rooms whose dry saunas and whirlpools melt tension quicker than butter melts on the calves of a sprinter. The Grille invites clubgoers to sup on steak or seafood, and a pair of outdoor decks let guests drink in scenic views.

  • 18-hole, par 71 course
  • Length of 6,611 yards

Q&A with Sara-Mai Conway, Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

In both cycling and yoga, our instructors are highly trained. We'll guide you alongside great music in a gorgeous, state-of-the-art studio. There's also nothing like the energy of the group. At Resolute Fitness, your resolution is our commitment. Our instructors will push you in a fun, all-levels environment. You'll want to stay committed to your fitness, because the classes and energy are fun, and the combination of cycling and yoga is everything you need for total mind and body fitness.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We offer cycling and yoga, along with a cycling-and-yoga combo class. These two activities are everything you need for total mind-body fitness. Cycling classes are a high-energy, 45-minute total-body workout. (Yes, we do upper body weights in cycling.) Yoga classes are a 60 minute power vinyasa flow?an athletic style of yoga that improves strength, balance, and flexibility. At resolute, we help people lead purposefully balanced lives.

Though they seem quite different at first glance, Tetra Fitness’s 12 group classes have a few important traits in common. All of the classes, for example, follow the lead of an elite instructor with experience in personal training and biceps strong enough to arm-wrestle Atlas to a draw. All of them also adhere to the company’s core values, which include such rock-solid maxims as “be adventurous and creative” and “do more with less.” The indoor cycling class certainly embodies these two values with its 50-minute workout that sends riders racing over hills and steep inclines on straightforward stationary bikes. The aptly named Sweaty Weights class requires students of all skill levels to “be passionate and determined” as they strengthen and tone every single muscle in their bodies. When the instructors compel their students to “embrace change,” they can reference their own Barefoot Burn cardio class as an example. This intense workout focuses on flexibility, calorie burning, stretching, balance work, toning for all the connective tissues, core strengthening, and corrective exercises for the feet.

The life of a Los Angeles corporate executive didn't suit Maja Kermath, so she decided to pursue a more personally fulfilling path by moving to Austin and co-founding Kor180. The fitness studio fosters a community-minded spirit that encourages members to collectively inspire, empower, and challenge one other. Trainers help by offering professional guidance while leading group classes intended to provide full-body workouts.

Kermath focused her studio on two types of workouts: Pilates and indoor cycling. The studio was mentioned in Austin Monthly's Best of the City 2013 issue as a standout Pilates studio, and Kermath's unique perspective and passion earned her a spot near the top for both Best Pilates Instructor and Best Indoor Cycling Instructor 2013 in Austin Fit Magazine. During classes, Pilates-inspired exercises strengthen and lengthen muscles and pulsating music accompanies indoor-cycling workouts as ryders simulate cycling up a mountain or imagine that it's just a very reasonable hill.
