When Regina Janesko had to take a physical fitness test in order to keep a new job, the avid gym rat and weightlifter wasn't worried about passing. Yet somehow she failed the first two times she took it, leaving her with only one opportunity left. When her test administrators suggested she try CrossFit, Regina went to Bergen County CrossFit, where co-owner Daniel Ramsay created fitness routines tailored to the requirements of her exam. Needless to say, she nailed it on the third try. Today, she's still an active member at Bergen County Crossfit.

It's a common occurrence here: people wander in, some with a specific goal others without, and eventually become part of a community that seeks to support and encourage each other. The daily classes can be modified based on age and fitness level, and incorporate techniques such as kettle bells and core strengthening. Co-owner Lily is also known to dish out nutritional advice, helping members supplement their workouts with healthful meal suggestions and tips on where to find low-cal snacks.

Inside the treatment room of Lotus Affordable Acupuncture, clients relax in their own recliner, their own buffer zone of personal space, and cover up with their own blankets—but they heal as a community. In China, community acupuncture is the norm, and acupuncturist Kelly H. Hahn’s adheres to this traditional approach. Kelly walks between the recliners administering sterile, hair-thin needles to the legs, feet, hands, and face while clients relax amid soft music for 20 to 45 minutes.

CKO Kickboxing's Joseph Andreula opened up his first gym in Hoboken, New Jersey, back in 1997. In that humble location, the fitness guru helped his clients shed their spare pounds and ratchet up their self-esteem with intense kickboxing workouts. Once word got out that Joseph's program of punching and kicking weighted bags got you more ripped than stay-at-home programs of punching and kicking ghosts, the gym caught on. CKO Kickboxing locations began to pop up throughout the country, where the newly expanded company's commitment to delivering heart-pumping workouts even earned a mention on NBC's Today. At the Hoboken location, all students are treated as equals as they strap on gloves and step up to the heavy bag. Trainers work with students of varying martial-arts or fitness experience and guide classes through up-tempo workouts of blistering jabs, uppercuts, roundhouse kicks. Each 60-minute class integrates strength-training and abdominal exercises, which help each participant burn up to 1,200 calories per class. All the while, dance music plays to help motivate students to take it to the next level and include a couple high kicks into their electric-slide routines.

In CKO Kickboxing’s action-packed classes, students wail away at heavy, hanging punching bags, working out stress while building muscles with every punch and kick. Because the bags are so heavy, they add significant resistance into the workout, toning up muscles more effectively than punching slabs of beef and then eating the evidence. During the 60-minute classes, students rotate between cardio and strength training, bolstering heart-rates and targeting arms, legs, and cores.
