In 1911, when he opened Standard Optical, Henry Schubach could not have guessed that his successors would be providing LASIK treatments and contact lenses in 18 clinics. Each office fills with chatter as doctors check prescriptions and work to identify common optical issues, such as glaucoma or weeping when an onion dies. Light skips off ranks of designer frames from Coach, Maui Jim, Guess, Lacoste, and Dior, and transitional lenses darken as newly keen-eyed patrons mosey from the shop. The staff at Standard Optical has also performed more than 15,000 LASIK procedures, and offers a free consultation for those seeking to ditch frames.
Beauty may be subjective, but beauty treatments are a science at Belladante Medical Institute. Led by Dr. Aaron Jones, the dedicated staff uses medical-grade technology to effect dramatic aesthetic changes. The center's Cutera Xeo cosmetic laser system inhibits the growth of stubble and body goatees, and the MiXto SX microfractional CO2 laser stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture and tone. Laser liposuction procedures help contour silhouettes fast, and medical weight-loss services strive to generate lasting results by combining customized diets with prescription medications intended to jump-start metabolisms.
Veterans and novices alike discover plenty of routes and challenges at Rockhaus Indoor Climbing Gym, where 12,000 square feet of bouldering, lead climbing, and top-roping areas create a wall-hugger's paradise replete with arêtes and cracks. After strapping on a harness and calibrating the belay device, climbers squeeze into a pair of shoes and begin dragging themselves toward a cloudy summit using the wall's colorful, candy-flavored studs. Hone complex moves and problem-solving skills in Rockhaus's bouldering area; or, if you enjoy vertical zipline rides, head over to the rappel ledge to practice free falling with a rope. Harnesses and belay devices are included in the deal, although customers will need to bring along their own shoes or rent a pair from Rockhaus ($3).
As standup paddleboarding has grown in popularity around the Salt Lake City area, Bear Lake Water Adventures has grown with it, expanding its collection of water equipment to accommodate those interested in exploring the emerging sport. From their outpost in Garden City, instructors outfit guests with standup paddleboards and kayaks, teaching them how to propel and maneuver their boards from standing, kneeling, or panicked fetal positions. Riders work their cores as they maintain balance, although boards are stable enough for seasoned riders to bring a dog along. Beyond lessons, Bear Lake's team members also rent and sell and standup paddleboards.
The Pilates Body sets limbs to lengthening with multiple classes per week that test core strength and concentration in a open and modern space. Sample sessions of mat Pilates, designed to increase strength, flexibility, and tone, or take stretches to a heady new echelon with the thermostat cranked during hot Pilates. The swinging Zumba classes provide fat cells with Latin background tunes as they are danced into oblivion, and the men's conditioning class allows men and their hairy-chested mats to reap the benefits of Pilates in a testosterone-rich environment. The staff's six highly trained instructors provide the guidance needed to renovate soul digs from a tackily wallpapered waiting room to a suavely painted sanctuary. Both morning and evening classes are available, providing multiple opportunities to get the energized feeling only exercise and jet-powered clogs can provide. All mats and other equipment are provided, but reservations are required as class size is limited to 12–15 people.
