Born in Switzerland and raised in Lichtenstein, Markus Nigg can remember sweeping up the hair in his dad's barbershop when he was only 5 years old. Following in his father's footsteps, Markus apprenticed as a barber, but instead of staying in Europe, he came to the United States and continued the tradition of the neighborhood barbershop. Now owner of M.E.N.S. Esquire, Markus keeps the shop as relaxed and welcoming as it was when it opened in 1928. A vintage-style barber pole spins just outside the entrance, and on the other side, an antique red bell announces each guest's arrival. As blues or rock plays on the radio, Markus and his three barbers stand ready by throwback chairs that cushion gents with green leather seats and sturdy metal frames. After visitors sit down, the barbers groom clients with haircuts, hot shaves, beard trims, mustache extensions, and neck cleanups.
With its glossy black tiles and ornate furnishings, the interior of Total Image combines the relaxing atmosphere of a contemporary salon with classic baroque styling. This balance between old-fashioned and modern elegance finds a worthy counterpart in the salon’s UV-free tanning and cosmetic services, which aim to imbue skin with a timeless beauty. The staff of experienced beauticians approaches each 15-minute spray-tan application with an uncommon concern for detail, evenly covering the skin with a DHA-based solution derived from sugar and beets. Across the salon, a dedicated team of makeup artists summons pink lips, tinted lashes, and cherry-red tic-tac-toe boards on forearms.
3-D/4-D ultrasounds at Stork Snapshots offer a crystal-clear view of a fetus’ face as he or she doggy paddles around in the womb. Mothers-to-be between 24 and 36 weeks pregnant meet with a certified ultrasound technician in a comfortable setting that eschews the cold sterility and derisive clowns of a hospital. The spacious, physician-owned studio accommodates up to four additional guests as stunning images reveal active offspring sucking their thumbs and wiggling their toes. After the session concludes, its memory remains in video form on a DVD, still images on a CD-ROM, and on glossy prints.
A Paul Mitchell focus salon, Hair By Mark & Company helps clients enhance the natural beauty of their hair or dramatically reimagines existing styles, using high-quality products in each service. In addition to cut, color, and styling services, the salon's stylists can alter the texture of hair or deftly add extensions.
At Asha SalonSpa, aestheticians and massage therapists combine forces to ensure the whole-body well-being of clients. Spa services such as facials, microdermabrasions, and prenatal care coddle the corpus from head to toe, beginning with a neck pillow and cup of tea. At the salon, makeup and nail services revitalize faces and fingers, and hair treatments such as cuts and color rely on Aveda’s natural line of products. Asha also offers several massages, including deep-tissue, couples, and chakra-balancing modalities, allowing patrons to unwind without setting off their clockwork motors.
Since founding her refuge of beauty in 1994, owner Amy Russin has amassed a staff of experienced stylists and aestheticians skilled in a variety of beautifying treatments. The menu emphasizes updo upgrades, but extends its aesthetic umbrella to include facial skincare, massage treatments, and manicure services. The glamorous gunslingers strap on bandoliers of products such as OPI, American Crew, Dermalogica, and Pureology to treat hair and hide, and other specialties include body wraps, waxing, and makeup application.
