Like any detective, Dr. William Shaffer sometimes fields tough cases. He might have to scout out the perfect contact lens for a hard-to-fit pair of eyes, glasses small enough for a baby, or the right glaucoma treatment. He takes on each visitor with the same cheer and ease, however?after more than 30 years of running a practice in Oxnard, he's learned how to navigate the tricky as well as the routine examples.

Dr. Shaffer examines eyes with standard check-ups and specialty procedures, such as corneal topography measures and glaucoma checks. He determines prescriptions for corrective lenses?glasses or contacts?and helps clients to browse a selection of frames, including specs from Guess and Ray-Ban. Above all, his office emphasizes convenience for families. It boasts eyewear for all ages, an on-site lab for quick repairs, and a bilingual staff.

Empire Eye & Laser Center operates under the watchful eyes of Drs. Joseph and Daniel Chang, brothers who each boast highly accomplished professional backgrounds. Joseph currently serves as Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute, demonstrating current methods of cataract surgery and banging erasers together for the school's resident surgeons. Daniel, a former chief resident in ophthalmology at Emory University, recently spoke at an international conference on lens implants and volunteers as a surgeon for his own foundation that accommodates patients with little or no insurance.

They, along with four other physicians and one laser aesthetic nurse, perform treatments from a menu divided into two sections: see better and look better. See better treatments tackle a range of ocular needs, from eye exams for kids and adults to LASIK surgery for patients such as MLB pitcher Colby Lewis. Oculoplastic surgeries populate the look better section, as well as laser cosmetic treatments that decimate hair and signs of age.

As a child, Marcela Gonzalez would play with her mother's makeup. She had a blast by mixing red lipsticks with blue eye shadows, creating her own untamed looks on her face and on those in the witness protection program. When she grew older, she began to experiment her makeup techniques on friends and came to realize that she had developed a true passion for the art of makeup application. Today, Marcela is a certified professional makeup artist and licensed aesthetician, implementing the same flair for beauty and creativity that she had as a child in her present-day beauty services. She specializes in bridal makeup services and skincare treatments while also offering tanning, waxing, and hair services with the help of a similarly talented staff.
