The Hottest 100 Music Festival paints the weekend in shades of competitive euphony as up to 200 bands, artists, and DJs strive for their place in the top 100. For two days, the scenic grounds of Irvine Lake are saturated in 12 unrelenting hours of melody, as bands representing every genre and necktie technique trade barbed jabs and retorting riffs across eight stages. Headlining Saturday's stable of hungry rock hippos, electro hip-hop trio Hyper Crush exercises irrepressible crunkitude, and the mirror-mesmerizing posse of It Boys! taunts audiences by eating multiple servings of songs without gaining weight. Sunday's supernova includes the hardcore crew of Stick to Your Guns, the brawny pop-punk of A Static Lullaby, and a special set from noted headbangers Bleeding Through, whose thrash metal solicits whiplash and spare change to launder a load of black T-shirts.

At Malarkey's Grill & One Hell of an Irish Bar, live entertainment is a constant, but the species of the performers is not. Musical acts take the stage on Friday and Saturday evenings, filling the dining room with bluesy twangs or rock 'n' roll riffs. However, just as often, pelicans make plummeting dives into the waves beyond the restaurant windows, and dolphins frolic in the neighboring surf. Their theatrics typically lead into shoreline sunsets—a more romantic conclusion to meals than playing "That's Amore" for your date on the rims of your wineglasses.
Even when it isn't hosting such dynamic displays, the sea remains an integral part of Malarkey's menu of upscale comfort food. Housemade crab and halibut cakes are a popular fixture throughout the entire day, from their breakfast perch atop eggs benedict to their spot on appetizer plates during lunch and dinner. Guests craving a more landlocked experience can eat alongside a dining-room display of shelved bicycles and motorbikes, partaking of macadamia-crusted chicken or pulled pork that has been slow-cooked in banana leaves for seven hours. Aside from the weekend's bands, the calendar boasts trivia nights and football screenings.
As one of the founding members of the Big West Conference, Long Beach State boasts a storied history of athletic accomplishments, thrilling 49ers fans with 18 sports teams. Today's deal enables hoops enthusiasts to catch a men's basketball game at Walter Pyramid, where guard Casper Ware energizes the talent-packed roster by sinking nothing-but-net shots and playing the school fight song on a conch shell.
Arthur Murray Dance Studio has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, the Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with an instructor as the teachers assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.
The Long Beach Playhouse is an upbeat and cheerful community theater in the city that is its namesake. Some of their more recent theatrical renditions include Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 Steps, Fiddler on the Roof, and a Midsummer Night’s Dream. The atmosphere of the Long Beach Playhouse is rather laid-back when compared to a conventional theater, with patrons being allowed to snack and drink both during the intermissions, and while the shows are on. The Saturday night performances here are often the most attended and acclaimed, with the theater being packed to full on these days. A fun, comfortable venue with decent quality food and drink at accommodating prices is what the Long Beach Playhouse has to offer visitors.
