Celebrating its 80th birthday in 2014, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra has entertained generations of audiences with seasons that thrive on contrast. Each year includes six classical concerts and five Pops! musical dinner picnic events in the newly-renovated Long Beach Arena. The Symphony also serves the community with free music education that has reached over 24,000 youth at schools, libraries, hospitals, and community centers. In addition, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra was the first major regional orchestra to appoint a woman as its Music Director, in 1989, and further gained international stature with its most recent Maestro who brought original compositions, world premieres, and celebrated international soloists to the Symphony?s repertoire.
The Long Beach Playhouse is an upbeat and cheerful community theater in the city that is its namesake. Some of their more recent theatrical renditions include Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 Steps, Fiddler on the Roof, and a Midsummer Night’s Dream. The atmosphere of the Long Beach Playhouse is rather laid-back when compared to a conventional theater, with patrons being allowed to snack and drink both during the intermissions, and while the shows are on. The Saturday night performances here are often the most attended and acclaimed, with the theater being packed to full on these days. A fun, comfortable venue with decent quality food and drink at accommodating prices is what the Long Beach Playhouse has to offer visitors.
Largely known for their frequent live music, Harvelle's low-lit interior is an intimate setting for enjoying drinks, gourmet food, and live entertainment, six days a week. Huddled over candle-lit tables, couples can enjoy craft cocktails from the bar or edibles from the kitchen such as the brandy pulled-pork and brie sandwich with caramelized onions or the roasted tomato and garlic flatbread.

What is one fun, unusual fact about your business?
The Warner Brothers believed a glamorous picture palace should be a place of escape, a place where dreams come true. They built three lavish art deco picture palaces in Beverly Hills, Huntington Park, and San Pedro. The Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, the first sound-equipped theatre in the South Bay, opened to the public on January 20, 1931, with a star-studded gala premier. Jack Warner christened it "The Castle of Your Dreams," created by its chief architect B. Marcus Priteca and designer A.T. Heinsbergen.
What?s your favorite part of your job?
Engaging and inspiring our community through the arts.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
In the mid-1990s, we saved the Warner Grand Theatre, a spectacular 1931 art deco movie palace and cornerstone of the town's revitalization. (Plans were to turn it into a swap meet.) Today, we promote and preserve this beautiful theater while also presenting events and educational experiences at the Theatre and at the Grand Annex, our cabaret-style venue down the street.
The spirit of '70s hard rock thrives as brawny Los Angeles trio Loudhaus cranks up the amps, bangs the skins, and knocks soaring vocals through the ceiling of Brixton South Bay. Previously known on the LA rock circuit as Bartholomew, the band has emerged like a phoenix rising from the witness-protection program to reintroduce itself as Loudhaus. The flocculent threesome recently flooded The Viper Room with their undiluted power of songs such as “I Am Not Your King” and continues its mission to free rock 'n' roll of wispy shackles during an opening set for seminal pop-rockers dada. Best known for the hit “Dizz Knee Land,” dada celebrates the 20-year anniversary of its album Puzzle by playing the record in its entirety, first acting out the liner notes, then shrink-wrapping themselves.
