In addition to the sense of perseverance and accomplishment that comes with finishing a 5K, the organizers of the Bacon Chase have added another incentive: bacon. During their two races?the 5K Piggy Pilgrimage, which is a traditional 5K, and the 0.05K Blitz to Bacon, which is a 164-foot sprint?runners can munch on unlimited bacon bits before feasting on unlimited amounts of bacon at the finish line. Runners 21 and older can wash down the savory strips of bacon with a bloody mary, and all runners get a Bacon Chase T-shirt and a signature bacon-scented bib. The festival opens at 8 a.m. and features many bacon-themed activities, plus music.

The festive day serves a greater purpose, too. Attendees will be able to register to become a St. Jude Hero, raise money for St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, or both.

Nobody leaves the Splash Dash 5K dry. A series of splash stations equipped with massive showers, shallow pools, and careening water balloons litter the 3.1-mile course, waiting to soak every participant before they cross the finish line. Down one straightaway, runners may confront a gang of volunteers ready to blast them with water guns, only to turn a corner and face the deluge of a fire hose. After braving the watery gauntlet, runners of all ages celebrate their victories at the Splash Dash Bash after party, where prizes are awarded for the best costumes and finish times as runners dance to music and attempt to dry off by matching the speed of their washer's spin cycle.

The Firefly Run combines the rigor of a 5K and a 10K race with the kaleidoscopic colors of a light show. LED beams and lasers pierce the dark, leading racers decked out in light-festooned gear through nighttime streets and parks to raise money for charity. Race coordinators keep competitors bright by encouraging them to wear costumes fitted with glow sticks, cartoonish helmets, light-up armbands, or any other light-themed decoration. Beyond the finish line, runners and audiences alike celebrate at a postrace dance party with live entertainment, visual effects, and a costume contest that rewards unique outfits and the athlete who was able to ward off the most gremlins.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday about togetherness and Latino culture. As runners tread the path between the beach and state park enjoying the beautiful ocean views, they'll compete for cash prizes including an iPod Nano and trophies. There are even phantom prizes awarded randomly to participants regardless of their race time. Everyone's a winner at the end, with the after party featuring Latin music, beer, and tacos at Dos Toros in Downtown Huntington Beach. Every entrant's participation also benefits the Save A Warrior Foundation, which is dedicated to helping veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress.
