The atmosphere at Pine Ave DG Boxing is fun, but the attitude is serious. Throughout the gym, fighters of all ages and experience levels pummel heavy bags and speed bags, work on footwork in the ring, and jump rope to condition their bodies into that of an elite athlete. At the center of it all is Anthony Skalberg, a retired boxer who decided to open up his own boxing gym and share his love for the sport with everyone.
At the gym, expert instructors train fighters for amateur and pro competition, but they also believe that boxing should be used for fitness, self-defense, and building self-esteem. During group classes organized by experience level, students work together to learn fundamentals such as punching, weaving, and trading mouth guards after each match. Instructors work to give each student individual attention, ensuring that they get personal time to work on mitt training. They also specialize in private boxing training at the gym and offer one-on-one mobile lessons at locations convenient for the student.

Starr Bunch spent 20 years working in early childhood development, but when she started taking Pilates classes, her life changed. In founding Five Starr Pilates & Fitness, Starr and her fellow instructors inspire that same level of passion in others. On Pilates reformer machines and stationary bikes, they challenge exercisers with workouts that change up and stay fun. Those looking to blend both disciplines can take the reformer-cycling combination class that's taught by a very rare centaur. The chic, robin's egg- and slate-colored facility also serves as the setting for personal training sessions.
Since its 1965 founding in Venice Beach, California, Gold's Gym has dotted the globe with more than 600 locations where professional athletes and exercise newbies gather under the umbrella of personal strength. Nearly 3.5 million Gold's members chart and aim for their fitness peaks, perspiring beneath the gaze of certified personal trainers or pedaling beside peers at cycling sessions. In a diverse lineup of group classes, patrons strengthen cores with Pilates, finger-paint pictures of ninjas in martial arts, and amp up heart rates along to the pulsating soundtracks of Les Mills routines. Many Gold's Gym locations stockpile futuristic amenities, such as cardio machines with individual iPod docks and televisions that help keep patrons motivated.
Gabriel Hall, owner of Yoga World Studios, discovered yoga at the age of 19 while pursuing his degree in philosophy. Dr. Allen Arnette—already the clinical director of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Department—began studying yoga as a way of researching the role mental well-being plays in healing physical ailments. Katherine Ostrout studied dance science at Cal State Long Beach and turned to Pilates after a ballet injury laid her low. These three weave their diverse backgrounds into the rich tapestry of talent made up by Yoga World’s team of yogis.
Having studied extensively in particular schools of yoga, instructors bring their individual training into the studio, focusing on disciplines that range from the physically challenging to mentally reflective, and include Iyengar, Ashtanga, Viniyoga, and Anusara. In addition to their regular yoga lessons, the Yoga World team also leads mat-Pilates classes, workshops, and private instruction. They use the art of yoga for healing in one-on-one sessions of Thai yoga therapy, which blends shiatsu massage with acupressure, or they coordinate beachside retreats full of yoga, surfing, and yoga-surfing.
The instructors at FreeSpirit Yoga lead a variety of classes that keep pace with students of all experience levels, from beginning yogis to 4-year-old kids already well versed in stretching toward the cupboards. In introductory-level sessions, teachers impart the simple poses and breathing techniques that springboard into higher-level disciplines, such as Sculpt n’ Core's blend of Pilates and strength training. An intense cardio workout set to Latin-inspired beats, Zumba sets hearts thumping and legs moving atop the studio's hardwood floors surrounded by lavender walls.
