Yoga Studio 6 LIC's experienced instructors bend over backwards to demonstrate a variety of Eastern styles in a cozy setting, from gentle restorative sessions to rigorous yoga-core workouts. The studio's schedule affords ample opportunity to flex with the Vinyasa flow moderate class, where breath syncs up with flowing postures and a fleet of interstellar satellites, and the gentle restorative-yoga session, which clears the mind with easy-going poses. Stretchers can work up a sweat in the energetic yoga-core classes, intensify yogic routines with the physically demanding Jivamukti practice, or learn foundational poses in a yoga-basics session, designed to turn humans into pretzels and pretzels into M. Night Shyamalan's pretzels. Warm saffron walls, shining hardwood floors, and jewel-tone hangings make Yoga Studio 6 LIC a calming venue for stamina building and karmic cleansing.
Originally invented as a yoga-like program for dancers, the Gyrotonic Expansion System is an elasticizing exercise modality that uses multidirectional and spherical movement to condition joints and increase overall flexibility. Trainees grab the cables on custom equipment such as the pulley tower combination unit, a machine that can be pulled, pushed, and yanked in more directions than a high-school romance. The undulating motions of Gyrotonic workouts provide many inherent perks, including stress relief and posture correction, as well as injury relief and recovery.

Hot air swirls around hard-working bodies, causing students to collect beads of sweat as they stick challenging postures. Reflected in the wall-to-wall mirrors, bodies bend, fold, and twist into 26 gentle, therapeutic Hatha postures as high humidity facilitates deep stretching, accelerated fat burning, and detoxification. Feet plant themselves onto the blue floor, which is illuminated by light that floods the white-walled studio from the rounded wall of windows. Certified by Bikram Choudhury himself, all the instructors draw on their rigorous 500 hours of training to captain morning and evening classes, ensuring attendees feel confident and secure and dispensing hands-on guidance. After each sudorific session, students can hit the on-location showers to wash off skin salt and prevent unwanted garment pickling.
Donna Rubin and Jennifer Lobo have extensive experience in Bikram yoga. Donna, a former Broadway performer, noticed that actors, musicians, and stagehands had little space to stretch and warm up before their performances. In turn, she chose the theater district for her flagship BIkram Yoga studio built in 1998, when Bikram was just gaining in popularity. The first Bikram Yoga NYC location soon blossomed into seven yoga rooms spread across four locations, and all are covered in Flotex anti-microbial flooring. This waterproof flooring protects against germs more effectively than than wood floors or cooties shots. Hygiene is important when practicing Bikram yoga, as the increased temperatures cause participants to work up a healthy sweat.
On the flipside, Jennifer has an athletic background, with experience in everything from marathons to soccer and tennis. She also worked as the communications director for IMG—a powerful force in the world of sports marketing. Together, Rubin and Lobo produced the very first Yoga Asana Championship in New York. They continue to do so each year while leading a team of more than 70 certified instructors who host nearly 300 classes each week, making it convenient for clients to fit sessions in to busy schedules.
Laughing Lotus Yoga of Anchorage’s founders, Kim and Svia, have shaped their studio around the mantra “freedom in practice”—the idea that clients should interpret yoga to best suit their own needs. In this mantra's spirit, the 11-yogi staff instructs classes in diverse modalities, such as stress-relieving Hatha, mind-and-body-balancing Kundalini, and Vinyasa flow, a mashup of styles. To further personalize lessons, instructors can tailor asanas and stretches to injured clients in private sessions, to expecting mothers in prenatal classes, or to children stressed from memorizing all the rules of freeze tag in yoga for kids aged 3–5 and 6–10.
An on-site healing team pampers physiques with traditional massages, Thai bodywork, and Rolfing. The studio’s boutique stockpiles yoga gear from brands such as form-fitting lululemon and festively tie-dyed Shining Shakti.
