Celebrating its one-year anniversary, ROAST Deli & Market caters to modern sensibilities in its chic deli atmosphere. At the counter, patrons can order meats by the pound, such as chicken and grass-fed beef that’s free of hormones and antibiotics. The seafood is wild and line-caught, and the free-range turkey comes from local farms.
These same meats go into ROAST’s dine-in and delivery menu. Certified Angus corned beef bolsters a reuben-esque Brentwood with spicy mustard and coleslaw, and all-natural short rib packs neatly into sliders capped with grilled onions and aged white cheddar. Organic lettuce cushions salads and sandwiches, and a similarly healthful selection of sides includes roasted veggies, sesame brown rice, and a bowl of shredded food pyramid posters.
While working as a hiring manager, Vijay Ingam found himself disappointed with the lackluster interviewing skills of many job applicants—even those from top business schools. So he decided to do something to help: he launched Interview SOS, a company dedicated to helping job seekers succeed at every step of the application process. Drawing on years of firsthand hiring experience and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, he leads a team of skilled résumé writers and career specialists in boosting each client's professional desirability. Overcoming anxiety, dressing appropriately, and addressing weaknesses are a few focal points.
Vijay Ingam, founder of the SOS Career Service, knows what it takes to impress a hiring manager—he used to be one himself. He also knows what disappoints them, as many applicants lacked the professional skills to land the job. Writer of The Definitive Guide to Ace Your Interview and Get the Job (and brother of Mindy Kaling from The Office and The Mindy Project), Ingam began tutoring hopeful employees in interviewing skills and how to craft attractive résumés, eventually opening the SOS Career Service. Now, his professional domain covers all aspects of the job hunt, including finding applicable skills and transforming résumés into vibrant documents. SOS also offers one-on-one coaching on how to make an impression, teaching job-applicants to overcome their nerves, and answering such tough questions as "just what are you doing in my storage closet, anyway?"
MNR Dance Factory?previously Molly & Roni's Dance Factory?has been providing a home for dancers for 20 years. The academy describes itself as a place "Where Dancers Grow Up," and helps budding young beginners and competitive dancers alike develop their skills in styles that include ballet, jazz, tap, and aerial arts in an airy, mirrored studio.
The classes are led by an experienced staff with a number of professional credits to their name?the studio's instructors have worked for the likes of Grey Goose, Chevrolet, and the movie Dreamgirls. And those teachers' work ethic and passion don't end when a shoot wraps and cameras transform back into pumpkins. Instead, when they pirouette into MNR Dance Factory, they enthusiastically redirect their energy toward the teaching of new artists.
When Darren Levine received his first Krav Maga black belt in 1984, he wasn't the first man to have worn that particular piece of fabric. The belt originally belonged to the man presenting it to him: Imi Lichtenfeld, the creator of Krav Maga. Darren had had the good fortune of learning the self-defense technique from Imi himself, and eventually became one of Imi's most trusted practitioners, developing training programs for more than 5,000 law enforcement and military personnel throughout the U.S.
In 1998, just one year after his beloved mentor passed away, Darren founded Krav Maga Worldwide to meet growing demand from curious civilians. The hand-to-hand technique is focused on reacting to realistic attacks, and teachers use scenarios inspired by everything from military combat, to late-night walks alone, to heated matches of Whac-A-Mole. Darren and his team lead various programs tailored for law enforcement and military members, women, fitness buffs, and even children, and they also offer certification programs for those looking to become instructors.
